Electronic Device + Bath Tub = Death?

Hi, I'm not sure if this should be in Electronics or Knowledge so here goes:

I was wondering if BATTERY operated electronic devices were safe to use in the bathtub? For example, my MP3 player which uses two AAA batteries. This is if the player were to be dropped in the tub. Would I die, feel a small shock, or nothing?

Also, what about headphones? I have a pair those normal clip on headphones. What if they dropped in the water? Plus, would water completely ruin headphones?

Thanks!! This information would be very useful!

I would just buy a shower radio or one built especially to handle water. Even if it does not shock you or kill you, the radio is ruined anyway.

You'll fry your device..... but you can safely drop it in if you wish. : )

Nope, AAA batteries do not put out nearly enough current to feel the slightest shock when factoring in the resistance of a quantity of water that size.

Thank you!!!

why would you risk something that costs $100 or more? If you must have music while taking a bath, why not buy a pair of $40 amplified speakers and run them on the counter?

I got a nice pair of portable Sony speakers that can run off of a wall socket OR off of batteries. Check em out.

If you touch the (-) contact of an AA battery to the inside of your upper lip and the (+) contact to the tip of your tongue, you'll get a good idea of just how little current it's putting out. You can barely feel it. Now on the other hand, a 9v will give you a nice jolt.

At the pool once I found a little robot that was opperating on like 3 little watch batteries, and threw him in the water. He worked perfectly. His eyes still lit up and he moved his legs and everything. I thought it was very strange.

What's ironic is that in that same pool, if you walk near (like within 2 feet or so) the underwater light, you get a tingly sensation in your legs.

You might want to have that pool looked at.
Water is mainly damaging to electronics because of residue fairly often. The resistance of water is quite high, and most stuff can survive a quick dip, providing it gets dried out properly. A lot of things will last in distilled water for quite some time.

electroncs + water = death to electronics.
