How do I make IE pop up a window instead of saving to a temp folder when downloading?

In IE how do I make it so whenever I click on a link to download something it pops up window so I can tell it where to save? Instead of automatically downloading to a temp folder. It's especially annoying with zip files.

I could do that but I'm too lazy lol. I just want to click on a link and have the window come up.

It almost sounds like you want to mess with MIME types, maybe. I'm not sure about IE, it may get it's mappings from the folder options, but if a link doesn't have a program associated with it, XP's gonna have to prompt you to find out what to do. The problem there is then all your files on your machine won't work when you double click on them either.

Although, switching to Mozilla will allow you to do custom MIME types so you can save stuff, and you wouldn't have to worry about file associations in XP.

Either way, I'd go with the right click like soopafreek says, it's probably your best bet.

I had the same problem and it pissed me off to no end. I just right click now. It is annoying, but I find it easier than the switch to Mozilla, which I never liked because it fucks up the dimensions of a ton of websites i visit.

Have you tried resetting your web settings in IE?
tools - internet options - programs - reset web settings

I don't know if it will solve the problem but it might be worth a shot.

you're talking about links like on this page, when you click USA right?

http://www.asus.com/support/download...53.zip~zaqwedc

The .zip file is a good example. Open My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types Tab...scroll to the file type, in this case .zip file, click the advanced button, check the box "confirm open after download". that will make windows prompt you whether to open or save the file
