question about headphones

I am looking to buy a set of headphones for use with my stereo/video game systems and possibly for watching movies as I have a goofy work schedule and am usually up all hours of the night and not always able to turn up the volume and get some nice surround sound going (apartment living and being awake at 3am)

Can anyone comment on some nice headphones to use or possibly to look into, I seen the ones below in an article in GamePro or something I was reading while at work and they seem pretty cool

Zalman REAL Surround Sound headphones

seems the company is best known for processor cooling systems and this is their first venture into the personal audio world. I do now know much if anything more than what the website gives about them and I am just looking for some input. More I think about it I guess they do not have to be a surround sound set of headphones just I seen these in the magazine like I said and they seemed very cool especially since they were REALLY surround sound and not simulated with 2 speakers.

nice phones listed below this is an edit...

price range i would like to stay maybe around $50 or so, no need to go uber with em, just something that sounds good while playing games watching movies in the wee hours of the morning to not wake everyone in the apartment complex up

Don't know your price range...

My recommendation: Sennheiser HD-580. Around $160. Closed, amazing all around phones.

Another vote for Sennheiser. Look at the SEN HD457
, or the model I got SEN HD212. Both are under $60.00

I was really suprised by the bass in these phones..

Yeah, there's too much of it. They are way bass heavy, and the highs aren't the greatest. My roommate has a set of 457's he picked up from the Virgin MegaStore for $30. I wouldn't go for the Zalman's. Number wise, their frequency respsonse doesn't even go to 20 Hz. Plus this is their first venture into audio. Good for them, I'll take mine from a company that specializes in headphones. Look into the Grado SR-60, we sell them in our store for $62.99, they are extremely well reviewed, sound great for the money (one of the employees swears by them), and have a full 20-20k frequency response.

I looked over the Senn site and could not find the 2 models Wulf posted above can anyone direct me to a link so I can check em out.

the frequency response etc is all greek to me, I have an old Pro-Logic surround sound system still and it sounds ok but I wanna upgrade it sometime in the future and when I do I just pretty much go with what I think sounds good so numbers do not mean much to me maybe if you could give me some sort of an example to compare with or direct me to audio samples for me to check out for myself what it would sound like.

"REALLY SURROUND SOUND" is crap. It's a gimmick and "simulated" surround sound with a good pair of headphones and a good processor will sound better than 3 crappy drivers in one set of cans. The reason being is that your ears function as points. Do to ever so slight differences in the sound, they can tell where it is coming from, but if 2 sounds were truly identical when they reached your eardrums, then you would not be able to tell shere they came from. If you really want reasonable sounding headphones with built in "Surround" these headphones will work: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...01707?v=glance

Otherwise get grado sr-60's, which are some of the best headphones you can get for under $100.

Another vote for the Grados. First time I heard them was through a vintage Marantz tube amp, man, that was bliss.

Don't feel bad, I don't speak Greek either. But I do understand audio. Basically human hearing (theoretically) ranges from 20Hz to 20kHz. Those Zalman's only reach down to 50Hz. The Grado's I, and many others, recommend, cover the full 20-20k spectrum.

Senn HD570's are pretty damn good, I've had 'em for over a year now and they rock.
