Riser Slots
When I built my superannuated 1.8 Ghz system long ago (dec 2002) I noticed my new Mobo came with a Riser Slot and a Modem to plug into it. I had no use for a winmodem so I never bothered. Now I wouldn't mind using it for something since my PCI slots are full. Do you have and use your Riser Slot? What is available for it besides winmodems?

The AMR slot was designed only for winmodems, and I don't think anything else can be plugged into it. I don't use mine since it pulls time away from the cpu, unlike a dedicated modem.
This page has a brief overview of the tech, including the problems associated with it. http://www.mycableshop.com/techarticles/AMR.htm

Are you dealing with an "AMR" (Audio Modem Riser) or a "CNR" (Communications & Networking Riser) ?
An AMR won't seat anything but a softmodem. A CNR, on the other hand, can seat a modem but may also be used for a network interface, or on some boards, additional USB or sound ports. Any of these functions are dependent on your motherboard chipset as the risers are basically breakout interfaces for embedded devices. Yes, the sound goes in the one -not- named Audio...the "AMR" name comes from the softmodem being derived from the DSP emulation embedded in the north bridge, which provides both modem and audio abilities. DSP emulation technology was first used by Apple around ten years ago, with limited success (anyone remember the GeoPod?)...the technology works much better today simply because the machinery is so much faster. |

Wee have a PCI vid card in one of our boxes, and in the other we have a network card, sound card, video card, and modem, all using riser slots.
You really gotta come back to #secret holo. I can't believe you made a tech thread
