Backing up Windows updates?
Is this possible? I want to reformat my mom's computer, because my stupid brother has filled it with spyware and dialers in his eternal quest for porn - he even downloaded a file called "Jordan Hardcore Porn.mpeg.exe"! And then he ran it. The computer's clean now, but to be on the safe side I want to reformat it and do a clean install. However, I don't want to download all the security updates and service pack again because a) it will take ages, and b) the computer will be vulnerable while I'm doing it. So can I burn them to a CD and re-install them after the reformat? If so where do I find them, and how do I reinstall them?
Thanks for any help. |

You can at the very least pre-download XPSP1a & DX9.x
As for them being on your computer still, very unlikely. Another source would be to get the MS Security UPdate CD, its got everything up till Feb 04' on it. Search for the thread about it on these forums.

Another possibility, though probably not what you want, is to download the Software Update Services server from Microsoft and set it up - it's basically a way to run your own, local, WindowsUpdate.com for your computers. It will download all of the updates you approve from Microsoft's website and store them on your computer. Then you go to other computers and set a registry value to point at the SUS server.
More information on SUS can be found here
