New RAM Woes...
Hey I just bought a stick of Kingston 512MB PC2700 ram to add to my stick of Samsung 256MB PC2700. Ever since installing i have been getting blue screens and random GPF's and shit like that. These only occur when i am playing a game or doing something intense like running bittorrent or using winamp5. I have messed with the placement of the sticks and changed the timings in the BIOS to "Auto" hoping that it would select more modest settings. Still no luck. I have ran the Microsoft memory tester on the ram with no errors. I currently have the 512 stick in slot 1 and the 256 in slot 3 (i have 4 slots total 1-4). Any ideas/solutions? Thanks for any help you may offer.

Try a memory checker. I use memtest86. It has served me well for a long time. Try it first with both sticks. If it throws errors, switch around the sticks until you find out which one is bad.

Try putting your memory in Slots 1 and 2 and see if it solves the problem.

And I have had two bad sticks of memory, both brand new. It happens--just like anything else, you can get bad pieces of hardware. If anything, it is more likely to be dead out of the box than to die on you later down the road. |
Well, your RAM is out of synch with the FSB of your processor, so instability can be expected. It's weird that it only started after you added the different brand, though! I'd wager it's simply a bad compatibility issue with your motherboard. Some RAM works great in my brother's mobo and won't even boot on mine. Might wanna check your mobo's site and check out model info. Some sites even have a list of the ONLY brands of RAM that your mobo will take.

I didnt see what OS you were using. if it is windows befoe XP or 2000, it can tsupport that much memory software wise, so when it tries to use it, it crashes.

i could be wrong, but i thought you had to pair the 256 meg strips
|
did you try taking the 256 stick out and run it that way, just to test for stability on your 512 stick?
|
Im running on both sticks now, i have the 512 in slot 1 and the 256 in slot 2, it seems to be working now after i reseated the ram in slot 2. I still am having stability issues that have started after the ram but at least no more blue screens and GPF's. I will keep testing and keep ya posted, thanks for all the help
