Thunderbird v 0.6 has been released!

Along with better spam-catching support and other goodies, it has a new icon to match firefox's style...

You can find more info in the release notes here.

For you gentoophiles, it's already on portage.

WARNING
DO NOT install Mozilla Thunderbird into a directory containing program files from a previous version. Overwriting files from a previous release WILL cause problems. To re-use the directory of a previous install, the directory must be deleted and recreated, emptied, moved, or renamed. You should not file bugs in Bugzilla if you choose to ignore this step.

The program directory does not contain profile information; any existing accounts, account settings, options, e-mail, and news messages will remain intact. This release does not require changes to your profile to function properly.

Important: If you used a prior version of Thunderbird and installed themes OR extensions, you need to do the following or Thunderbird may NOT run properly. Find your profile directory. There should be a sub directory called chrome. Remove everything in chrome. This will not affect your mail data or preferences.

And in following of SecretMethod70 I'm changing my avatar

Edit: SM70 no longer has (or never had and I remember it wrong) the firefox avatar, but at some point someone did, and I followed with this one....

I've got it installed and it works great!

It starts faster than the last version and these new spam filters are great. It hasn't made one mistake yet, and even caught some stuff that I didn't expect it too.

This software performs excellently and its not even final yet. I can't even imagine how good Firefox and TBird are going to be when they hit 1.0

I've just installed it too: and it seems a little slower on my system. (with menus and such)
But it is waaaaaay faster with 'view->headers->all' turned on, as that was slow as hell on 0.5
Spam filtering works fine and catches a lot (but 0.5 did that too).
Overall the look has improved, and loading is indeed quick, but I don't know if it's quicker as I hardly pay attention during bootup (it loads at startup)..

I run SuSe linux btw, so experiences may differ with other OS's

i like it... the initial load seems a lil bit longer

but i like it...

still cant minimize it to the tray tho... that is the one thing i like about outlook better...

SM70 had the Firefox avatar, then changed to to Microsoft on April 1, then went on to other avatars.

I haven't followed Thunderbird. Can you use it to access a Microsoft Exchange system? I'd love to pull LookOut off of our company server...

As far as I can understand MS Exchange is a IMAP server, and Thunderbird supports IMAP servers in general.
MS Exchange is also specifically included in Mozilla Mail's IMAP test procedure, but I can't find details on wether it specifically works with MS Exchange.

You could of course try it, and report back to us! I don't have access to an IMAP server so I can't check thunderbirds compatibility.

I've given Thunderbird a try back in v0.5, and again with 0.6. I want to like it, I really do, but there's just something missing in it for me.

Maybe its the fact that you must have seperate inboxes for each account (and yes, I realize rules could fix this, but I shouldn't have to fix it, it should just work).
Maybe its that I haven't had a single spam in years, so the spam filter is worthless to me.
Maybe its that I can't minimize it to the system tray (unless someone has figured out how to do this since).
Maybe its that, being an Outlook user, I like to have my email client be a part of a larger, PIM environment, which keeps synchronized with my PDA.

Maybe its all of those things.

Frankly, the only thing that I found while using it that I liked better than Outlook was the speed at which emails in the preview-pane loaded. But a half-second speed boost is not worth it if I have to drop all the features which I've become accustomed to.

Cool, thanks. I'm not ready to implement this in my office yet, but now I'll keep it on my radar. I've only set a couple of people up with Firefox, although I install nightly trunk builds. Waiting for the 1.0, can't confuse the users.

Yeah, Thunderbird certainly supports IMAP--Ive been using it on an IMAP account since 0.4.

I got .6 and installed it yesterday. So far, no problems. I cant comment on the spam filtering though, all my email is filtered server-side.
