Lcd monitor?

I need a new monitor, so i've been thinking of buying a lcd.

I need a lcd monitor who can handle fps demanding games (quake etc).

Any good suggestions?

Oh and i want a 17"

Tell us whereabouts you live - And in what area (state?)

I can link you to lots of good providers of LCD's in the UK but they will not be much help if you live in Texas

www.pricewatch.com :P

Although I guess you should research what to get first, I can't tell you much, the only LCD I have is on a laptop so I didn't really pick it :P

Tom's Hardware has had two or three really comprehensive reviews of LCDs in the past several months. They do look at refresh rates and how games look on each monitor so you might want to read what they have to say. Check out the reviews elsewhere especially at gaming sites since they will probably cover this issue.

Frankly, Samsung makes some of the best LCD panels out there. Also, reasonably priced, in comparision to others. But I suggest you research at techlabs etc.

Also, if FPS gaming is really important, skip LCD. CRT is still on tops. however, if you only play once an a while, I suggest you visit gaming sites and see which models they recommend.

dont do it, the monitors aren't up to the challenges of these games generally, but as stated above, check the reviews first. I have NEC multisync lcd, great for general purposes but not games of high quality.

That might be dictated more by a one's budget rather than anything else!

ive got a Samsung Syncmaster151s Which is 15" yes, but my friends got the next model up which is a 17" and its unreal
we are both "hardcore" gamers and i notice no laggyness with the screen and drops in FPS or whatever,

i love it .....

It all depends on the refresh rate. I have a 17"LCD that I game with and it does beautifully. Given I'm not a gaming geek, but I don't see any lagging. CRTs will always have a crisper picture, but I don't think that you are losing much with the LCD. Its worth it. Battlefield 1942, Hitman 2, MOHAA, all play well on my pc as well with movies.

IF you want a killer price, go to pricewatch.com as advised earlier, and check out winbook. You'll be amazed at how cheap it is. And good too.

I got a Samsung 172T a couple of months ago and it just amazing. Its a 17" model with 25ms refresh time which makes it more suitable for gaming or DVDs than other models and is razor sharp (when using the DVI input). Dynamic range is a little lacking, so it may not be the best choice for image editing. I paid around $600 at buy.com

Indeed, the problem is that most manufacturers (LCD) have different standards for this rate. Some mention the half refresh, some full and some...heh. As always, buyer beware. Also better check for specific application compatibility and usability before making purchase.

Yeah, i've been looking at that one.

People i've talked to who has the samsung 172t are very pleased with it. That old myth "lcd's are crappy for gaming" is just not true imo.

I'm going for the samsung

Better try it in your game apps and see for yourself. Different people have different acceptable standards. So there.

i have been reading lately that LCD's are getting better color matching and also getting some better refreshes. Like the graphic artists I'm going to sit this one out and stay with the CRT for the time being.

Does a flat screen CRT have any problems like slower refresh times? Or is it still suited w/ the quality of CRT overall, w/ a flat screen?

I just threw mine across the room last night I got so sick of it. Colors display like shit and it really messes me up going back and forth b/t my LCD and CRT. So I've decided to stick wth my CRT. Good riddance LCD! Muahahaha.

I had a Samsung CRT ten years ago that
was crap, so I admit I was dubious when
a Samsung SyncMaster 171N showed up
on my desk a month ago. But it's been
just great -- and they're not that expensive.

Not a game player so don't know about
the gaming angle.

My personal opinion is that you get the biggest CRT that you can afford. You're going to enjoy a 22" NEC a hell of a lot more than a 17" LCD because of the quality of the picture, the superior refresh rates, and the shear size alone.

Actually, LCDs will have a more crisp picture then any crt out there especially if you use the DVI connector. Right now i'm using dells top of the line LCD, 20.1 inches.. just a huge screen size, it does however have one dead pixel, which is the only downside to LCD screens as they won't replace them unless they have 6+ dead pixel (have to really look though to see even one). Also you need a to look for a LCD with a response time of under 20ms to have a "ghosting" free performance. And the other thing, its ALOT easier on the eyes, and you get what you pay for LCD wise.

LCDs suck for gaming. IMO, they just suck in general. Ever heard of dead pixels?

I've got a mulitsync 1800 and it's great. Not a single dead pixel in 3 plus years and I really like the dual inputs. I do wish I had gotten the newer ones with the DVI inputs, but i'm still pleased and my eyes thank me every day.
