windows update (xp pro)

pc specs: windows xp pro
512 megs ram
18.6 gig harddrive, 1 10 gig partition (windows), one 8.6
(mandrake 9.2)
120 gb external hd (usb), one 60 gig ntfs (windows), one 60 gig
journalised extension 3 (mandrake)
no clue on the motherboard
cdrw/dvd rom, floppy drive
IE 6.0.2800.1106

i tried to run windows update several times recently, and for some reason each time i try it crashes IE. it always worked before, and i'm thinking that it may be a problem with the activex control that is responsible for controlling access to the microsoft update server. my problem is that i don't know the name of the activex control, so i can't find it to see if it's corrupted, and as i don't know the name i can't replace it either. this may not even be the problem, this is just what i suspect. replies would be appreciated, and any other suggestions on what the problem might be also.

internet options, settings button on general tab, view objects button.....the activex control is called Update Class (double click it to verify the CodeBase starts with http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

not sure what else it could be. have you tried installing updates downloaded directly from the download center? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/s...displaylang=en
