Kazaa Lite and the College Network ;) - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Okay, as Im sure you all know, many schools block or restrict the speeds of Kazaa on school networks.

I can connect to Kazaa (though it takes a few minutes), then the searching goes rather fast, but when it comes to downloading - my dial up is faster. I found in the Kazaa Lite options where you can change the "incoming port" but that doesn't seem to help anything, even when I set it to 80.

Basically, I was just wondering what my other options are. I have a LinkSys EtherFast Cable / DSL Router (Model BEFSR41) with 4 ports, which I currently use to be able to use two computers in my room off one line. The reason for the Router instead of the hub is because the school activates the line for one MAC address and one MAC only - I turned in my routers MAC to the school.

ps. I talked to the network admin down in the lab where they manage all of this. He said for the size of the school we have more than enough bandwidth and he didn't see a problem with file sharing - it's just something he was asked to do.

The first google for HTTP tunneling.

Should work for http tunneling kazaa.

After installing and reading the FAQ, it seems that htthost only works for SOCK4 connections where Kazaa only accepts SOCK5 under the proxy settings. I tried it to be sure and it just never connected.

This program will still come in very useful though

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Software, router settings, etc. are all good.

What the most likely situation occuring is that your network admins on campus have what's called a packet shaper established at the network boundary. This mystical packet shaper examines all packets leaving and entering the network and prioritizes them based upon protocol type. It figures out protocol type by examining the contents of the packet, the headers, etc.

As such, it can figure out that - for example - a Kazaa download, no matter what port it runs on, is a Kazaa download.

Tunneling to a computer outside of the network is your best bet, as if unencrypted Kazaa traffic passes through the packet shaper, it's gonna get slowed.

I believe you are correct as the Network admin's were talking about a priority system that is in place at the moment.

There is no way to get on the Kazaa network. Trust me I tried. However I did find a program that works. www.winmx.com and www.softgap.com They both work and I have had mixed results with both, but they work.

Most likely they "get around the speed cap" because the admins aren't familiar enough with them to know that they exist and block them - where everyone knows about Kazaa.

I've tried WinMX in the past but it was the same as Kazaa.

I'll give Ares a try.

Ares just made my day.
Since this uses an odd port number just like Kazaa, I would assume you were correct Pragma about them just examining the packet headers.

If PvP sharing is blocked on your network but traffic inside the network is unrestricted you could set up a direct connect hub. Once the word gets out expect very fast downloads

. You would only be able to use it within the campus though most likely.
