I'm having an issue with the Jedi

It is too much, let me sum up....

I have this machine I've slapped together that I put games on. It sits in the living room and keeps people off mine.

It runs Win XP and I've installed a handful of games on it.

SimCity 4 - Runs great.
C&C Generals - Runs great.
Jedi Academy - Ran great until yesterday....

I was away for the day and a fellow (let's call him my little do-it-yourselfer) decides to install a game on his own. Splinter Cell : Pandora Tomorrow. There is no way that this game is going to run on this system because the video card is specifically mentioned in the minimum requirements as unusable. Normally, he runs stuff like this by me, but I've been lazy lately... He installs it anyway, finds out there's a problem, Googles it and proceeds to try everything under the sun to get it to work. He gets frightened he uninstalls it and never mentions it to me.

Now Jedi Academy doesn't work. It gives me an OpenGL error and refuses to start.

I've googled the problem and tried everything I could find....

I went to the LucasArts website and adjusted accordingly
I downloaded the latest video drivers for the video card. (it had been rolled back.)
I've tried editing the win.ini file as suggested.
I've tried the suggested driver from LucasArts.
I can't use system restore. (I had it turned down low and the subsequent "fixes" my friend tried have used up all the system restore point "space" so I have five restore points on the same day.)

It's a Win XP machine with a GeForce4 mx420 video card. I just know it's got to be a setting he's messed up because I was playing this stupid game two days ago.

Anyone have any idea? He seems to "remember" updating directx to 9.0b, but that wouldn't be a problem would it?

I'd really like to be able to play this game again.

Once upon a time...

I would suspect directx has been b0rked,
run dxdiag and see what comes up.

See if you can uninstall and reinstall the directx drivers. That might work.... If not, try the same thing for OpenGL.

dxdiag was ran and everything looks okay. It's giving me the thumbs up in all the catagories.

I was under the impression you couldn't uninstall directx; you could only upgrade. Did I misunderstand?

As for the OpenGL, I can't find any seperate OpenGL drivers for XP. Every page basically tells me that the OpenGL files are included in the video drivers and I should install the latest.

Thanks for the help

Yep.

I rolled back directx with a handy little program I found at MajorGeeks. It reverted to 8.1 and when I re-installed the game it went ahead and changed it to 9.0 (not 9.0b, which was installed)

Still stuck. It seems to be an issue with OpenGL as I've seen the problem on boards discussing Jedi Outcast; Return to Castle Wolfenstein etc..

Hell, I don't know what's going on. I must admit I'm almost out of my league.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the Graphics card drivers? I should think these would reinstall any videocard-specific opengl files

I had a problem with neverwinter nights at one point (also an error with the opengl drivers) and this was the only way to reinstall the opengl driver files. Just remember to uninstall the video drivers in safe mode.

Note: I have a geforce 4 ti4200 and just reinstalling the driver on top of itself didn't work for me.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several sets of drivers. The latest, the drivers the game was tested on, various sets that others have recommended because they worked for them.

I have a few more schemes up my sleeves before I call it draw and move.

Thanks, I do appreciate the help.

yah, I've had the same problem before and I had to completely uninstall the video card (installed a different card) and reinstall the card.

I've found a fix!

After searching archive after archive, I found SciTechGLDirect.

I thought it was a scam, but surprise, surprise the friggin' thing works.

Now what does this stupid little program do that I can't get my video card to do anymore?

It works and believe me I'm not bitching, but it's a demo version. Not to mention, now the irritation isn't at the game not working, it's at not understanding why it didn't work in the first place.

Anyone familiar with this? Anyone got any ideas?
