Where did my Windows Media Player go?

I cant play any movies in WinPlayer. My computer downloaded the latest patches, and now i get this

Windows cannot find 'C:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe.' make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search.

I never typed any name in, and didnt move any folder, or touch that program.

I did get some funky adware program that keeps changing my home page to www.esearch.com or some crap like that.

I ran Nortons, and Adware (the brower hijacker is still there too)

How do i get the winplayer back?
thanks

I've got the same problem as you after I d/l the latest updates. But not the esearch crap. WinPlayer is not there. Found an .exe to install the new upgrade but it can't locate or d/l the necessary files.

WTF?

BTW - I'm Win 2000

Maybe your Norton is out of date? Or possibly you have a virus which has rendered Norton useless. You might try <a href="http://housecall.trendmicro.com/">Housecall</a>. It's a free online virus scanner that works really well. I find it better than most other commercial virus scans, and it is trusted by many corperations in order to keep virus free.

As for Windows Media Player, you can just run a search on your system for wmplayer.exe If it's not there, you might want to try reinstalling it.

There will be a file located on your c: drive that is out of place. The name changes all the time, but search by date by most recent. It more than likely will be the only file not in a folder in the c: drive. Also, check for registry keys--You should delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvwizard32.hta
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\xvwizard32.hta

And remove these from your registry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xvwiz32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvwizard32.hta
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xvwiz32] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\xvwizard32.hta

What is happening is theres a prog that runs upon startup(well, after) that modifies registry entries. It will constantly change yer start page until the file is no more.

Secondly, d/l and installwmp9.0

Also, after you delete the *bad* file, run some cleanup progs. i.e. system mechanic, registry first aid, adaware, etc.

Also, when you're done, ditch Norton beacuse it is a piece of shit and d/l AVG. This is yer new antivirus. Then go to Trendmicro and run an online virus scan. This one is neat 'cause it finds trojans too--which is what u have.

Finally...Stop going to lame porno sites. Thats where these come from.

I downloaded WMP9 and installed. Its crap. Keeps encountering errors.

tkkfan 04-16-2004 11:41 AM

uninstall any instance of wmp then use sys mechanic or something of the like to clean the drive, also clean the reg, restart, then reinstall.

Give it almost a fresh drive b4 u reinstall

To get rid of the spyware program, that changes your homepage:

Get cwshredder @ http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Also d/l spysweeper to keep your machine from being reinfected by spyware @ http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php

busted....:o

I searched like you said and came up empty.

tkkfan 04-17-2004 02:45 PM

Ok get these progs (or some like it)

System Mechanic
AVG
AdAware
Registry First Aid

Then run Housecall
Then set your homepage back again
Then Defrag
Then Restart.

btw, if ur not using winxp, keep your fingers crossed the whole time (no system restore)

Also, if all else fails, just search google and see what other people are saying. All you have to do is type in the web page that keeps displaying on yer cpu. Might be a few files I missed.

tkkfan 04-17-2004 02:47 PM

oh i forgot. If you're gonna go look at pron, then start at www.p-bot.com, then from there go to www.jizzhut.com, www.sexy-flix.com, www.hereistheporn.com

These are the safest sites that I have found. No browser hijack bullshit
