Windows Key Trick I found

Hey I just found something cool in windows I'm sure everyone but me already knows, but if you hit the windows key and the corresponding first letter in a program in the start menu it opens it right up.

Like "windows + I" opens Irfanview for me.
Windows key + b opens burnatonce
etc etc.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else didn't know it either. I just stumbled on it whilst trying to set up Hotshot:

I tried to set a combo for Irfan and it opened anyway, so I closed it and lo and behold it's already built into windows!

tip: If you have two program starting with the same letter just rename one of them. Like Paint Shop Pro is P fo me and Photostudio is E for edit.

I'd guess that the & to underline a letter trick might work for this?

(disabled my windows key for random reasons, so can't test it here).

Ie:
Foo
Foxy
both start with F.
Foo
Fo&xy
might show up as
Foxy
with windows-x working?

windows key d minimizes everything.
There is a keyboard shortcut to everything that u can do with the mouse. Open explorer, open favorites, open searches, etc

also special symbols = i think hold alt or ctrl and press numbers on 10-key.

u get foreign letters, like é

is there a keyboard shortcut for moving the mouse?? hold some keys down and left arrow or up arrow? I end up navigating with TAB, and pressing the first letter of the filename on the keyboard, but have wondered if there was a way to actually move the mouse with the keyboard...

Holo 04-14-2004 11:46 AM

Yeah I know of the D, E, and R shortcuts but I had no idea it would open start menu items and I figured someone else may not know it either.

You can use Mousekeys in the Accessibility functions of Windows, but I prefer Joystick mice:

and for a bonus a joystick remote for winamp:

Woah! Hold on! You mean to tell me that there is a Windows key? I never knew any of this until this very moment. Why can't I just download like in the Matrix...

Windows + M also minimizes everything. Is there a difference? Seems weird to have two shortcuts for the same function.

windows + d is like a "show desktop" finction. you can also hit it again and it will restore to how it was before.

so its better than windows + m ..?

wakelagger 04-18-2004 09:22 AM

Windows key + F opens up the windows find/search utility. I used to be able to get IE to add the www. and the .com to internet addresses by using Ctrl + Enter, but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

Caphreak 04-18-2004 09:28 AM

i removed the windows key from my keyboard because i hit it too much while playing games... looks like im the loser now!

Dragonlich 04-18-2004 09:49 AM

How's about alt-F4 to end a program, or shut down windows?

Xirax 04-18-2004 04:55 PM

Silly me wanted to try this out, but then realized he was in KDE ;-)

I got the same thing! Lousy counterstrike...
At least there's still the nifty little "Show Desktop" icon at the bottom.

portwineboy 04-20-2004 06:40 PM

Sort of moving off topic here but I recommend this to anyone who gets annoyed by the windows key when they play games.

beats removing it from your keyboard!
