Flat screen LCD

I'm looking into buying a 17" LCD for my computer. Cana nyone recommend a good one? I have been using a poor 17" gateway monitor for the last 5 years. I play video games online ALOT. So I would like to be able to play, without constant headaches and bags under my eyes.

also, I know very little about it, but could a RCT or whatever it's called be a cheaper solution?

for gaming.. CRT's are the better choice.. unless you wanna drop some money on a good LCD.. a friend of mine has a 19" Samsung 191t and he games on it all the time.. and the picture is great.. i have a 19" samsun 955df CRT.. and its been great for all the games that i play

basically what you're looking for is HIGH refresh rates.. the higher the better because theres less strain on your eyes

For CRTs (those big ones), you need a monitor that can give you 80+ Hz at your standard resolution. For TFTs ("LCD"), you need a screen that has a 25 ms or less (preferably less, 16 ms is fine). That'd roughly translate to some 40 frames a sec, or 60 for the 16ms.

And yes, CRTs are still better and cheaper, but also much larger and heavier. And the whole technology is different, as is the result of working on them for a day - with TFTs you have no more eye strain due to low refresh rates, for example.

No substition for the Dell 1901FP or the top dawg, the 2001FP. Get it, got it, GOOD!!!

if you want to game get an CRT, lcd do not refresh faste enough to get a good, accurate picture.

Can someone recommend a great CRT Monitor? It will definately reduce the stress on my eyes that I get now from this Gateway tank right? I got one of those protective screens 3 years ago thinking it did something........

How many frames a second can *your* eyes see? I can't seem to see the difference between 60 and 70 fps, but that could be me - I might be getting old at 27. :)

A few years ago, I would have agreed with you. TFTs have come a long way in that time, though...

NEC and Benq make some of the best LCD monitors, I have sold ALOT of the benq ones.

Our eyes see things as "smooth" at roughly 15 FPS. That's what most TV was for a long time. However, when playing games, if you only have 15, or even 30 FPS, it looks choppy when you move (usually because it slows down), and it puts strain on your eyes.

I also can't *see* the difference between 60 and 70 fps, but I can feel it after a while at the desk. Don't ask me to explain why... I can't =P

The NEC FE series are probably some of the best screens on the planet right now. Get as large a monitor as you can afford (shouldn't be too hard, the 19's are around $250 right now). I love mine, and would never trade it on a TFT.

I personlly think the crt for gaming and tft not is allready behind us, most tft screens offer very sharp pictures with almost no ghosting...

only think you might consider is when buying a large tft is that those screen have 1 native resolution, and lets say for a 17" that's somewhere around the 1280*xxxx resolution. All other resolutions are interpolated thus reduce image quality. So that means if you want to fully benifit your screen you also have to have a machine that can run games at a high resolutions...

No longer technically true, like someone else said the human eye can only see so many frames per second anyway. Television is only 24 frames per second, your average video game is about 50-70, a good LCD screen is about 60 fps at 1280 resolution.

I personally own and reccomend the Samsung 17" LCD,

anything with 25ms response time or less should be fine. If you can't afford $400 for a good LCD I would get a CRT rather than getting a cheaper LCD.

I'd take a look at ViewSonic. I have a 19" G90f that has served me very well. Several of my friends have bought similar ViewSonics after seeing mine and have all been pleased as well.
