Processor Question

I have an Epox EP8k7A motherboard which has a 266 MHz front side bus. I want to upgrade the processor, currently using an Xp 1800+. The Epox website says that the highest speed the mobo will support is an XP2200+. My question is: Can I put in an XP2400 and will it work properly? The reason I ask is that all the XP processors up until the 2400 use the same 266 FSB, if both procs have use the same socket type, and same FSB shouldn't they be interchangeable?

I can't go to a 2500+ because that's when AMD switched over to the 333 MHz FSB, which I know I definitely can't run.

Your motherboard most likely won’t support the higher multiplier that the XP2400 uses.

Could I buy it anyway, just in case, and at worst, if it doesn't work as a 2400, just use it as a 2200?

Yeah... but for the unappreciable difference you might as well just get a 2200+ and buy yourself a coffee and donut with the money you saved.

Update:

I went ahead and bought the 2400+. It works fine. When it boots up it says the processor is running at 2000 Hz, although it does say unknown processor. I don't really care though, I do notice a speed increase when I'm running applications so I'm happy.

Does it report that it's a 2000+, or is it actually running at 2000 Mhz? Quite a difference.

Here's a link for CPU-Z, it's a program that detects info about your system. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Also, a BIOS flash might help. Good luck.

well you should not have just bought it with out checkig into it, but since it worked more power to you...

basicly you should have checked with the MB maker and goten a BIOS update for the MB, that should alow you to hit it up to any 266 (i think 2400 is the break)

i did this just a while ago and i poped a 2400 into an old ECS board. it would not post, i droped the old 1700 in and i updated the bios, put the 2400 back in and it worked beautifly.

The BIOS reports the processor as running at 2000 MHz, however it says unknown processor. An AMD XP 2400+ processor has a clock speed of 2000 MHz, which is what my BIOS is reporting, so I'm happy. It probably can't recognize the processor becuase my motherboard was made before the 2400+ was created.

Ehh, I'm too lazy to go find a bios update, as long as the processor is actually running at its full speed I'm happy.

I think that there were some 2500+ procs that were created with a 266 FSB but those are kinda hard to find. I figured, why push my luck trying to find and install a 2500+ when the difference between the two is negligible.

I read through this thread a long time ago but it will probably address most of the issues you would have had if you didn't buy and install the processor http://forums.amdmb.com/showthread.php?threadid=167018

On a side note, I am also using the epox 8k7a motherboard and there haven't been any new bios updates in a long time (march 2002 according to here http://www.epox.nl/english/support/bios/socketa.htm ).
