Anyone still use the command line?

Recently I've been going on IRC in BitchX via a Unix Shell connection. For talking to friends, it is just as good as mIRC. I actually like the feel of the command line interface a lot, feels like it's the good old days again. I realize a GUI, any GUI, is "better" but I still am enjoying what the command line has to offer.
However, I can't see myself every using it for everything. Reading e-mail, typing text files and chatting are very nice, but browsing the web is a joke with Lynx, since 99% of sites are garbage in text mode.
I also always have to have a GUI open in the background to play mp3s and talk to people on AIM/ICQ.
At any rate, I was just wondering if anyone used the command line still. Do any of the hardcore Linux/Unix Slashdot type guys actually use it fulltime?

I'll make the bold statement here and say NO ONE uses console FULL-TIME anymore. At least not for desktop use. The most powerful way is a combination of both. Console is a lot easier for many things - GUI for others.

Links is better then lynx.

Empty_One 05-05-2003 07:44 PM

heh, well, right now, I'm reading this while using links, the best text browser in my opinion. I't actually not that bad running in an xterm. If you want to see how it looks, check out my pic I posted in the nonsense forum
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=5126&
I have the best of both worlds, slrn for newsgroups, irssi for chat, pork for AIM, mutt for mail, links for browsing, vim or nano for editing, all running on a gui with a pretty background picture, and dock apps giving me info. All running as fast as can ba, on a p166 with 64 megs ram. I couldn't do all that with only gui apps on this machine

I use command line exclusively on my Linux servers, and use it quite a bit on my Windows and Linux desktops. It would be a little difficult to surf the TFP without some sort of GUI though :P

i use 4nt (windows console style) a lot, probably about 50% of my time outside actual editing is done there.

oblar 05-05-2003 09:45 PM

i use the console a fair deal.. actually i probably use command line more often than I use gui. Even for file management I still use the Command Prompt in windows (even though it is a shell of its former self) when I am forced to use windows.

and as far as playing mp3s and chatting on aim and such.. There are console versions to do both. mp3s are easy to play in the background with just using mpg123... and I remember seeing a console version of AIM/ICQ, but I have never used it.

Yeah, my linux server is strictly command-line only.

I even use "command prompt" a good deal when I'm in Windows (as DOS was the first environment I ever became familiar with)

I use the command line for reading e-mail. But when my school upgrades their e-mail server next fall, I will no longer be able to use Pine :(

termnl 05-06-2003 04:32 AM

I use a good mix of the 2.

gui for web(firebird), chat(gaim), and news(pan).
cli for editing(vim), mp3 player(gamp), and irc(bitchx)

the above progs are the majority of my usage.

I do like having cli through xfree86 more because I can use gpm(to copy and paste from the console)

try "links" instead of "lynx",

I still use the command line lots in Linux, DOS (yes I still run a DOS macheine), and Windows.

There are just somethings that are much easier to access through it than would be going throught the GUI.

DonnChadh 05-06-2003 03:04 PM

About the only things I use the command line for now are Ping, Tracert, and IPConfig

Not much call for any other use of it in 2k for me

Krycheck 05-06-2003 09:19 PM

What ever works best for me at the time. If i can start a program faster that way i will. If I wanna see any errors when starting one even better. I still like to do some editing via VI sometimes.
Usally aways as root in a terminal when installing and compileling.

kenshee 05-06-2003 11:28 PM

I use it a lot when in linux.

Btw if your videocard supports it, links can display graphics. IIRC you just have to compile it with the -g option (not sure though)

I'd have to agree with SecretMethod70. I for one use a combination of xterms and gui apps in unix. However the cli apps far out weigh the gui ones. I typically only use mozilla and gmplayer while in X everything else is via an xterm

WildZero 05-07-2003 03:12 AM

Yes, mostly to run network monitoring apps like nmap and tcpflow.

A little known trick is that any windows programs launched via a command prompt retain the permissions granted to that prompt. If you use the "runas" program to start CMD, you can have one administrative console that launches all of your other GUI tools administratively. I've got little scripts and batchfiles written so that I don't have to run up and down the file trees to find the executables too.

It's been said before though, the best way to work is to use all of your tools effectively. Not using a GUI interface just because it's not Console is pretty stupid, especially when the GUI is faster/easier/more reliable. Now, if the GUI takes forever to load and flakes out all the time, more power to you.
