Generating pages with PHP/Javascript

I'm trying to write a user friendly web-based interface for viewing an SQL database. What I want the page to do is load up a list of what entries are on there with a load of tickboxes next to them, so the user can click the tickboxes for the entries they want to view, then click a submit button to bring up more details.

I have already got most of the code I need to do this, but I can't figure out how to automatically generate the tickboxes or how to automatically format the data into a table. I know it can be done, because it's basically the same idea as a webmail browser, but I've only been doing jscript and php a couple of days and I don't know the commands.

I'm not necessarily looking for a detailed explanation or source code here, but at the moment I can't find anything on google, so even suggested search terms would be useful.

Thanks

There are alot of variables including what type of db you are using, how many rows you want to print and so on. Anyway, here is some code I use on my admin page to list all of the links and give the option to delete them. Maybe you can decipher some of it enough to help you,

PHP Code:

for( $i=0; $i<$num_links; $i++ )
{
    $link_info = mysql_fetch_array($result);
    $cat = $link_info['category'];
    $cat_query = "SELECT * FROM link_categories WHERE ref='$cat'";
    $cat_result = mysql_query($cat_query, $db);
    $cat_info = mysql_fetch_array($cat_result);

    ?>
    <tr width="85%">
        <td width="55%">
            <h6><a href="<? echo $link_info['href']; ?>"><? echo $link_info['name']; ?></a></h6>
        </td>
        <td width="25%">
            <h6><? echo $cat_info['name']; ?></h6>
        </td>
        <td width="20%">
            <h6 align="center"><a href="index.php?page=admin&function=delete_link&ref=<? echo $link_info['ref']; ?>&block=links_ad">delete</a></h6>
        </td>
    </tr>
    <?
}
If you only wanted to print a set number of rows, just change the for loop. You could easily add a form around the code and have the checkbox send the id of the row that you are requesting info for.

Good luck.

That's brilliant, thanks. The basic concept I was missing was escaping the php within the loop. I should be able to sort it now. Cheers
