Having probs with movies.

I downloaded a couple of muvies & im having probs with them. Id appreciate some advice.
Im using windows media player (maybe the problem??)

The first one:

1 hour long, Mpeg layer 3. It plays for a few seconds fine then the picture freezes but the audio continues.

The second one:

Dont know the format but My pooter automatically associated it to Win media player.

THi info is there (i think) press play & all I get is a black screen, no pic, no sound. The file says DVDRIP if thats any clue.

Dou youz know whats wrong?

Thanks for your time.

most likely its Divx.

goto http://www.divx.com
Download the lastest FREE version. Not divx pro, just the regular one. You don't really need the one with adware.

Use the player that comes in the package.

Thanks meanspleen

Edit:

But it didnt work!

I D-loaded DivX like you said, tried to play the movie & it says:

"The video file you are opening includes video data that is not recognised by hte DivX Player.
The file contains the following type of data:

VIdeo Data: FOURCC code "0"

You may need to install a new vodeo codec on your computer to watch this video."

Thanks for the info anyway.

You might try G-Spot. I found it in the popular windows downloads thread. It tells you exactly what codec a video file is using. Then you can search google for the codec, download & run it, and then should be able to use Media player to play it. Hope you get them going.

I second the use of Gspot, it was able to tell me the codecs of files that i thought were just bad, or never figured out what codec was needed to play them properly. If gspot doesn't help, then maybe you got a corrupted file.

it has an extension.. you might need to tweak the controls of windows XP a little.

to do so in the folder the file is in:
click "tools"
then "folder options"
then under the "view" tab.. there are a bunch of checkboxes that adescrivbe a bunch of properties.
look for "hid know file extentions"
then uncheck it..
that may help you..
Also.. i second using ffdshow and Gspot. More than likely it's either a Divx file and encoded wrong, or possibly an Xvid file that you need to convert to Divx.

well for one its claiming to be a T3 dvdrip, which last I checked, T3 wasn't in the theaters yet so expect it to be fake, and since it claims to be a dvdrip, it is either in svcd form( .mpg) or in divx/xvid more than likely it is the latter so do what charliex suggested

I recommend the Nemo codec pack. Don't think you can go wrong with it as long as you don't have a Matrox G400 video card.
