MAC sux!

I guess this should be in the humour section but since it's computer related I've thrown it in here instead:

http://www.komfort.dk/film/mac.wmv

so funny - and SO TRUE! God I hate the fact that my art school ONLY has MAC's

I don't watch WMVs, but I have no problem with the Macs at my school. Best of luck to finding a manual or workaround.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Media Access Control addresses. "MAC" is an acronym. "Mac" is short for Macintosh.

Platform wars are not good - no matter what - though thankfully this hasn't blown out of proportion.

I know people who swear by Macintosh computers, I know people that swear by x86 computers. Personally, I own 5 computers:
x86 laptop (runs OpenBSD)
x86 server (runs OpenBSD)
x86 desktop (runs WinXP Pro)
Sparc64 server (runs OpenBSD)
PPC desktop [iMac] (sitting in basement collecting dust, harddrive salvaged to put in another machine)

I just couldn't think of a use for the iMac - my laptop and servers run most vital applications (vim for word processing, pine for e-mail, webserver, etc.) and the Windows machine I use mostly for games and chat.

'MAC' is Also used for the Monkey's Audio lossless audio codec. I was a longtime MAC user but switched to flac some time ago.

Jeez man, lighten up!

Seriously though, my somewhat limited experience with OSX has left me loving it. The only thing that keeps me from buying a Mac is that its components arent anything I can upgrade and that I wouldnt have any of my software for it.

I only have limited experience with MAC's, mainly trying to get them to properly communicate with Windows NT server networks. It's not bad, and it would take me a while to learn I have no right click...but to me Mac is like Linux, sure it may be better looking, run faster, print true...but the software, or lack there of would be bothersome.

I agree.

PPC arch is superior per clock cycle than x86, but Macs are still too much $$ and the software availability is maybe 10% of what it is for windows. Half of my apps I use regularly are unavailable on Macintosh. I would love to have one if I was rich, but I don't use a Mac for the same reason I quit using Linux. It just doesn't have everything Windows has, for all it's faults.

If rebooting randomly constitutes a personality, then my computer has personality to spare.

With regards to the Mac vs. PC "wars" I read this bit by Umberto Eco some time ago and it has always stuck with me...

...."Insufficient consideration has been given to the new underground religious war which is modifying the modern world. It's an old idea of mine, but I find that whenever I tell people about it they immediately agree with me.

"The fact is that the world is divided between users of the Macintosh computer and users of MS-DOS compatible computers. I am firmly of the opinion that the Macintosh is Catholic and that DOS is Protestant. Indeed, the Macintosh is counter-reformist and has been influenced by the 'ratio studiorum' of the Jesuits. It is cheerful, friendly, conciliatory, it tells the faithful how they must proceed step by step to reach--if not the Kingdom of Heaven--the moment in which their document is printed. It is catechistic: the essence of revelation is dealt with via simple formulae and sumptuous icons. Everyone has a right to salvation.

"DOS is Protestant, or even Calvinistic. It allows free interpretation of scripture, demands difficult personal decisions, imposes a subtle hermeneutics upon the user, and takes for granted the idea that not all can reach salvation. To make the system work you need to interpret the program yourself: a long way from the baroque community of revellers, the user is closed within the loneliness of his own inner torment.

"You may object that, with the passage to Windows, the DOS universe has come to resemble more closely the counter-reformist tolerance of the Macintosh. It's true: Windows represents an Anglican-style schism, big ceremonies in the cathedral, but there is always the possibility of a return to DOS to change things in accordance with bizarre decisions; when it comes down to it, you can decide to allow women and gays to be ministers if you want to.

"And machine code, which lies beneath both systems (or environments, if you prefer)? Ah, that is to do with the Old Testament, and is talmudic and cabalistic..."

Sorry, but that is the most irrelevant method for assessing a processor in the world. Bar, perhaps, deciding you prefer the colour of one box to the other.

Computers running system do have their place and I see no reason to bash them. I would love to have a decent Macintosh to use if finances would agree with the purchase.
Feel so deprived only having four systems and four OSes to use

Can someone give a quick rundown of what was in the film. I've a slow net connection.

Silverbrain, as far as Macs not having right click - they do if you have a multibutton mouse attached.

Also networking is said to be much better in OS 10.3.3.

And Holo, software availability is growing very fast now not the least because UNIX apps are being ported across. It's pretty much a nix computer these days. Check out VersionTracker and see if you can find what you need there.

My friend Henriette is probably the biggest MAC hater in the world and she loved this film so much that she decided to write to Hunter Cressall himself and actually got a reply:

"Subject: crash different mac parody

I watched the Mac parody made by Hunter Cressall, and i haven't laughed
that hard over a parody for a very long time! it was SO perfect made, down
to the last thing, and is really great to watch if you've had a bad mac day
which i've had the day i watched it. I'm studying to be a graphic
designer in denmark, and we also use Macintosh - and nearly all of the
things Hunter talked about has happend to me as well... I've never seen
that advertising that's mentioned in some of the emails i can read on your
website, probably because i'm from Denmark and it's only people in my line
of work that uses macs, but do they actually claim that Macs don't
crash??? Because if they do, there most CERTAINLY is something wrong with
my mac, because it can easily crash a couple of times a day if it's in the
mood - but to say something positive - it's has taught me the lesson to
ALWAYS remember to save the files i'm working on - and to do it often....
Hunter Cressall is a VERY funny guy and i hope to see a lot more from him!!
Keep up the good work!
Henriette, Denmark."

"Dear Henriette,

I am gratified to learn that my cautionary tale has reached the delicate
fiords of Denmark. Considering that the current Mac family was designed in
Sweden I take your letter as objective and sober praise. If you visit the
apple computer website, you will find the original Mac ads there - non-crash
hyperbole and all. Rest assured, macs DO crash and there is nothing wrong
with yours...the problem lies somewhere within Apple computing itself.

If you are ever in town, please drop by and we can kick a couple of iMacs
around the studio.

...and bring those little cookies which make your country so popular here in
the States.

Cheers!

Hunter"
