hd problems
 

so i go to my friends house to fix hes comp. I run a virus scan and find like 100 infected files. And everthing is runing slower than hell so i figure its the virus. So i tell him its best to just format cuz geting all those infected files off is like a lossing battle and since he has nothing that is realy not easly to get bak then miss well format. So i take hes comp home and im gona format it for him and reinstall all drivers and stuff. I set it up that night and when i go to format it takes literly 50 hours to format a 40 gig hd....And ive formated alot of hd's and non took over about a hour. This is only a 40 gig hd. It should not take over about 30 mins. So what my question is do u guys think the hd is what is the cause of the slowness of the computer. And can the power supply cause the hd to be slow cuz they just changed powersupply about a week b4 this happened.

its a 40Gb drive, which means it's a number of years old.

I'd say that maybe the drive is old and it's going...

Cynthetiq has a point, excepting off course that a 40 Gb drive isn't at all that old, it can still be past it's better days though... also it may have a high number of bad sectors, you may want to check for that with the windows scan thingee...

hummm but you can still buy 40 gig drives everywhere, so that may not be true....

but a chance the drive is dieing, or just a POS... now that its wiped put it in your box and see how it does....

though i have never really seen one slow down b4 dieing, jsut ones that are slow as compaired to new drives....

Sounds like bad clusters. You might want to try a low level format. The drive manufacturer should have some kind of utility you can use.

i got it formated it just took me a long time. Now that is format im gona stick it in my box and run scan disck and stuff on it. Thanks for the help. IF i got more questions ill post
