Linksys Router and Cox Internet Problem
 

Hi all, I have searched and searched but I could not find a solution to the problem I am having.

First of all, here is the hardware: Linksys 8-port BEFSR81 router, Motorola Surfboard 3100, D-Link DI-524 wireless router, two computers and a laptop.

I stream Winamp to Shoutcast to listen to at work. I have been for the last month and a half. I recently moved to a new appartment, set up everything and worked for about a week. I was at work and between the ours of 2pm and 4pm on Thusday, the 11th, the stream cuts off. I go home and my internet works, but it was VERY slow. I disconnect eveything and thats when I lost it. The modem only works when one computer hooks up to it directly. The Linksys router will sometimes not let me into it's firmware, and when I hook the modem up to the D-Link, it will not see the modem. I have tried upgrading firmware, shutting things down in order, and calling Cox. Cox would not help me unless I subscribe to their "Home Networking" service (an extra 9.99 a month). The only thing I changed on my service is I removed the second computer service (basically another IP). The router should take care of that, correct?

Anyways, I thought that when I removed the second computer service from Cox was the problem, so I changed it back. Still, nothing. I sent Cox an email and let them know of my frustration (I can always vent better when I am typing) and they told me I would have to call them.

Does anyone know if Cox started doing something differently lately? I have tried both router off of the modem but I get nothing. Here is one wierd thing, the internet worked for a while when I hooked the modem into one of the ports of the router instead of the WAN port. Then, the next day, nothing could get to the internet again. Err!!! :confused: :(

Have you tried mac addres spoofing? Maybe Cox is only allowing the PC to connect. You can connect to the Linksys & tell the WAN interface to use the MAC address of your PC. I've heard some ISP's can cable folks will not let routers on their cable modems, since that means more than one person can use the modem at a time.

I tried Mac Spoofing the Cable Modem on the Linksys and I may have not done it right. I will try that once I get home! Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know if that worked.

Most ISPs do not want you to host anything off of your connection. They might have noticed the increased traffic and restricted your connection.

Just a thought.

OK, all set. I tried the MAC spoofing and that didn't work. I called Cox again and they said that they were not receiving a signal from the router. The had me pull the power in the router and then they remotely reset the modem. I plugged the router back in and now there is internet! I did that numerous times but I guess they did something special on their end to fix this. Hmmm. I wish I knew.

wow surprised they didn't care that you had a router.........my ISP wants another 10 bucks a month for networking, so I just stepped around that instead by never calling them.........screw paying more money

I wasn't talking about your router, I mean your isp might start to block ports that are used in your upstream. Hosting a website or any kind of multimedia from your home may be a voliation of your user agreement.

Also many ISPs will limit there modems (cable,DSL) to a total of 2 MAC addresses before they lockdown your account. I know that Time Warner does this, and I am pretty sure that comcast does this as well.

I'm not saying that you should stop broadcasting, I am just saying that your ISP might be on to you.
