Enlarge your hard drive
Has anyone heard off/done this?
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14597 I have a new 250G WD. I'll see what I get. |
Geez, this thread looks a lot like spam ;)
Nope, haven't tried, but I have wondered. Thanks for the link! |
Cocktopus, you go ahead and try that, I'd be curious of the results )
|
Hmm, I'm more than a little skeptical of nearly double the capacity due to "hidden" partitions. You would think that companies would be doing this with existing drives and trying to market them with the huge increases.
|
OK, its bullshit. What they are talking about are the partitions that are often written to drives that come with an OEM machine that have a rescue image of the OS on it. Basically, it is an installer for the OS so that if you fubar your system, it can be nuked and reinstalled. I know my IBM laptop has it, and most Dells do too, I believe. Yes, you can get some of your space back by doing a zero-fill format, but the space used is usually on the order of 2GB or so--dont count on doubling your space unless you have some tiny-ass drive to begin with.
|
Agreed, sailor - as best as I can figure out they're referring to the OEM partitions. No fucking way can you get a huge space increase like that. I wish I had a spare computer and a copy of Ghost to prove it.
"Sure, despite the laws of physics and everything that says we can't do it, this 200GB harddrive can actually hold 500GB of data" - no. Pure bullshit. I can't believe how many tech sites are passing that link around, as anyone should be able to tell its fake. |

I didn't buy the 200->510G part, but I can see companies consolidating manufacturing lines and "rebadging/disabling" (eg WD 160/200G). |
I'm with sailor here, this sounds like "doubling the size" means they wiped the partition with the recovery info.
Which, if these guys think that's doubling the size of their hard drive, they probably shouldn't have deleted that partition, since I think they're gonna need it....real soon. |
I read the forum discussion of theinquirer.net It said this will crash the system when you write to the new partition cause it isn't valid.
|
From what I understand, they are managing to overlap partitions, putting two into the same space...
That can't be good. |
|
hey, it's The Inquirer, guys! Discussion stops there! :)

Seriously.. it's sad when the word "Enlarge" makes us think of Spam. I thought the same thing when I saw the title. Too much fuckin spam! |
