HDD spins down during boot???

I just built a new computer with an ASUS K8V Mobo. I've disabled the on-board RAID controller. Here's what happens when I boot; The HDD spins up, then the bios flashes a splash screen, then the HDD powers down and then spins up again. Finally, it starts XP. Anyone know why the HDD is spinning down? It adds a delay to the boot time.

Is this a western digital?

I have two in my computer and both sound liek the spin up, stop, and spin up again...

i've had one of them for over a year and the other i got about two weeks ago... so far they've been working just fine but i havent noticed MUCH delay on the boot time, perhaps 2-4 seconds

It is a Western Digital. I never even thought that it might be the drive itself. I just assumed it was the bios. Thanks for the info.

As far as I know, the Athlon64 mobos have a strange habit of turning on, then going off, and then turning on again. We've build quite a few in our computer store (not me personally, though), and I've seen it happen repeatedly. Probably a "feature". I have not seen the bios screen flash, though, so it's not quite what you described. It *might* be the harddisk, but it might also be this thing.

I have WD drives too, and I have no such problems here.

I contacted Western Digital, and it's definitely not the drive. As for the bios splash screen, it's an option in the bios setup, 'on' by default. Thanks for the help. Glad to here that others have seen a similiar boot sequence.
