can you plug a Cable modem into the uplink port of a switch and use it as a router?

You can plug the cable modem into one of the regular ports but you will only be able to pull as many IP's as your ISP allows. |
Unless you have one of those spiffy cable modems with a DHCP server that will do NAT and routing for you. I *think* some Motorola SurfBoards have that capability...

No, you can't with your modem, unless you get more then one IP from your ISP (you have to pay more for that)

Just buy a router, they arent expensive, and are very easy to setup. Not to mention it would work better.

ill probly just keep using what im using now. I got a hub and have the modem hooked up usb via one comp and just shared on the rest. Just a problem once in a while if the comp freezes and etc. But not that big of a deal. Was just tring to find a fix that dont cost $. Thanks for the info guys

Just put together a crap DHCP server, bingo, free IPs all around!

Like sailor said, a router would be so much easier. Might as well get a wireless one while you're at it. takes about 2 min to configure, they're really cheap these days, and you can have as many users subnetted off of it as you want. Plus wireless is easy as hell to setup. Just plug it in and run the software.
