Currently what's the best way to get your web site on search engines?

best way -> paid advertisement at google

for google, the higher you get is determined by the number of lnks *to* your page, so you need a lot of that and for them to update the index.

fr other engines theres a few "submit it to a search engine dealies" that just tells the search engines spiders to add your site to the list to crawl for content

don't add a bunch of meta info tags with false content words as lot of sites do, all decent search engines spiders will detect and reject this.

You can submit your site to google and that way their spiders will crawl your pages. This will then put your pages in their database so there is a greater chance it will be included in the new index at the next google dance. You can also submit your page to dmoz.org the open directory project. The best free way is to go around and submit your site to all the different search engines. Some make you pay so skip over those if you don't want to shell out the cash.

"best" ways involve pay for placement as stated above.

all the free ways are overloaded with submissions and return poor results.

you can actually goto most search engines and there is a part in wich you can submit them,
putting keywords in the <head> of you index or default will also help
