Win 98 issues
Our Win 98 PC at home is having issues with rebooting - it just seems to randomly reboot (no BSOD, either).
Its connected via broadband, and has only started to do this after the broadband install. Its a PII400, Asus P2B mobo/bios, 192 meg of RAM, boots off a 2 gig drive, and has a 40gig data drive setup. Broadband is connected via a USB modem. Any suggestions? |

Check for driver updates of the USB modem. This sounds like something's telling the hardware to do something wrong and it's panicing and rebooting. I'd think the modem is sending something bad.
Also.. get a spyware sweeper + virus scanner + firewall for your machine. It could be possible somebody is causing you to reboot. |

I was wondering about checking for updates on the USB modem - thanks for confirming.
I've got NAV setup on the PC, I'll have a search for a suitable firewall and spyware sweeper .... guess I'll have to run the full windows update as well, get the latest and greatest of everything billies boys wants me to have. |

oh yeah.. Windows Update is a definite need.
A good spyware scanner is Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/). It's free. A good firewall is ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...id=zadb_zadown). There's a version of it that's free as well (I tried to get you to the download page for the free version at the link above). Keep NAV up to date as well, but I think that goes without saying ![]() If you don't like Ad-Aware or Zonealarm for some reason, I'm guessing people will suggest other programs on this thread soon. If not, do a search for "firewall" and "spyware". There have been threads on both subjects that will give you plenty of links and information. |

Most of the time when computers reboot like that, it is because it is either a bad powersuply or it is not powerful enough to power new hardware you added. This is one thing I learned from my A+ Hardware class. Swap out the power supply and you should have fixed your problem, only $20 or less too. Get a good one though not a generic, these are worth going for quality.

Its got a new PSU ... but I've found the fault.
The Sagem USB modem has "issues" with Win2K and GeForce graphics cards, that require the USB mode to be changed from "ISO" to "BULK". Okay, I haven't got Win2K or a GeForce graphics card, but it has worked. What I'd like to know now, is why the heck the latest drivers can't fix this bug? It seems like its a known fault as well. Damn me for not checking it out earlier. I've lost out on a few active torrents due to this. |
