Agh Help Windows Xp pro bios and bugged
I am currently running windows xp pro and tried to replace one of my cd rom drives. I made a bad mistake. I bought a new cd rom and put it in with it's switch set to master when it should've been cable select.
So when I restarted it -it took a major shit... and it is STILL taking a major shit. The monitor reset to VGA mode and now no cd drive works... Does anyone know how to reset the bios in windows xp pro? More importantly do you know how to get out of my predicament? Thanks |

Bios (Built-In Operating System) is completely and utterly independant of Windows XP (Not Built-In OS)...
Well, the way to reset the BIOS on 99% of motherboards is you take one jumper and move it over, on, off, move it back, and you're set. Consult your manual / manu. website for which jumper though

that sounds funny, cause i installed my new comp accidentally with both cd drives as master, it didnt give a hoot. i could only see one, until i changed one to slave.
Your problem seems more like a driver issue. did you install any drivers. or did you do any changes to the bios before it screwed up. or maybe is your cd drive on the same cable as your primary hard drive. that could make stuff screw up if the cd is master Just FYI, i never use cable select. either master or slave. less haslle that way

The only reason I said cable select is because the one I pulled out had cable select on it the one I put in was set to Master as a.default jumper position.
Right now my system boots but it's complaining. Of course, no cd disc drive is working. Yeah I can dig out the manual. I probably should've looked at it before I started this fiasco. |

so you replaced your old CD-ROM with a new one, and the old CD-ROM was set to cable select, and this one is set to Master?
I'd just do something along the lines of "HDD Auto Detect" (or something similar in BIOS). It should bring up the new CD-ROM. Make sure if your new CD-ROM is set to Master that you have it on the end of the IDE cable, not in the middle.

Excuse me for pointing out the simple solution. Remove the new drive, change it to cable select then reinsert it. This should clear up most of your problems.
The other thing you can do is remove the new drive, boot up, fix problems, put new drive back in after changing it to cable select. |
