New computer--old compaq monitor won't display but old optiquest will

Hey guys--I've never really tried this before, but I'm trying to run this new setup (barton xp mobile 2400+) running at 2.5ghz on my compaq monitor (mv740). Its an old 17" monitor that came with an athlon tbird 900. I can get my new computer to work fine w/ old crappy optiquest, but compaq won't work at all. All I see is a blue screen as windows is trying to boot and then it reboots before I can even read it.
Please note, it does this at any speed, even default (which with a mobile xp is something like 600 mhz).

Any help would be appreciated. This system is for my bro, who just so happens to also have a crappy 17" compaq monitor that he wants to use w/ his new beast of a computer.

Right now, it just reboots, says windows didn't start up properly and asks me to choose a mode (yet it won't let me input from keyboard at this stage--only in bios or when windows starts, which it won't, w/ this monitor).

In essence I'm stuck in an endless reboot cycle until I pop in the optiquest 15" display that I use as a backup for when laptop screens go bad.

Please tell me that monitors aren't proprietary!

i assume you're running XP for your OS.... if that's the case, if you are able to get the computer to boot up properly, maybe using a different monitor, go into your system properties > advanced > startup & recovery settings, and uncheck the "automatically restart" under system failure. this will get rid of the quick restarts.

otherwise, you'll just have to stare at the blue screen and get as much info as possible (which may take a few restarts)...

as far as the problem goes... sounds like a drivers problem. did that monitor come with any installation disk?

p.s. i just went to HP's site to look for your drivers, and there doesn't appear to be any XP/2000 drivers available.... maybe the monitor didn't pass the XP compliance.

If it works fine on the optiquest then I would boot up with it.

Get into the device manager, Uninstall all entries under Display Adapters.

Do the same for Monitors, is its even listed.

Shutdown and reboot with the compaq

If that dont work, go back to opti

Go into Display Properties

Settings/advanced,Adapters,Properties

Drive tab/ Upddate Driver

Check install form specific location

Dont Search, Choose and Next

Then install a Standard Display adapter.

Reboot with the compaq. If it work then install the latest video card driver for your card...

Thanks, that --almost-- worked, but I'm still having big probs. I was able to boot by removing my nvidia detonator drivers. THEY seem to be causing the prob.

Remove drivers = boots with compaq.
Tried to reinstall drivers, restarted, got blue screen of death that flashes so quickly that I can't even read it.

Could this be some funky bios setting that I'm not seeing?

I can't figure it out.
