I am looking for a certain program. It could really be anything but it is something where you can record one track (like a bass line) and then record another (like a lead guitar or something) and have them separate and edit them.
Can anyone help me??? I am going nuts trying to find this. My friend had one that did that, but I don't know the name. Help would be um... helpful.

Hmm... Perhaps you seek something along the lines of Cakewalk Sonar 3 or Cubase SX 2.0?

I haven't used either, but I hear Sonar is a wee bit more stable. Both should do the job you want, and in fact are probably overkill.

I use N-track and it works out pretty nice. Plus you can download it off the net pretty cheap.

Damn, those all look like what I am looking for (I am definetly looking for an overkill =P) but I can't get any of them. Either my soundcard isn't compatible or my operating system or I can't download them (I would like to at least try a trial version).

if you're looking for a simple multitrack program, sonar may be overkill... cakewalk has a $50 program -- home studio (i think). you might want to try that out.

beware though, i'm told that cakewalk (or at least sonar) has known compatibility issues with n-force audio drivers/formats. (this is second-hand info though, so i'm not sure of it's validity.)

I use Fruity Loops which is now called FL Studio.

I grabbed the trial first and then puchased their "Studio" version. I'm really happy with it, though I don't do much live recording, it does support it. However I just use a controller and a mic.

I wouldn't really recomend Fruity Loops for what he's doing. It would be cool for him in that he *could* get some recording done through it but he could also map his own drums out to play to.

Here's a quick rundown. I might leave a few out:

Digidesign's Protools
Apple's Logic (used to be by Emagic...)
Steinberg's Cubase SX
Native Instrument's something...

These are all the top of the line, professional MIDI/Audio sequencers. They will definitely be overkill for single-track recording that your'e talking about, however you mentioned that you would like overkill. Well these will do all that and a dime sack! Be prepared to shell out $300-$1000 for any of them.

Sonar
Cubase SL
Sound Forge? (just editing..? not sure)
Some others

These are going to be your amateur line of software, but good because they are mostly made by quality companies who also put out the high end stuff. What are you looking to do? Edit sound files or arrange multitrack songs?

Fruity Loops
Steinberg's ReBirth
Steinberg's Reason
Some other smaller take-off's (Native Inst.'s Intakt and Kontakt)

These are more for the electronic music musician. However You could write some pretty interesting beats in Fruity Loops to play along to. Rebirth is more for 'dance' music, and Reason, which I love, is like a big-big brother to ReBirth.

Um I think what I want is the multi track program. Acid looks good and I downloaded the demo but when I try to record it says "unsupported media type was requested." Any ideas???

if you want a free open source program, check out <a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php">audacity</a>. i haven't used this personally, so i really can't tell you much about it.

usually that indicates that you have something screwed up in your record settings. Check to see what format it's recording in.

What kind of sound card are you running, most now a days have only 1 stereo in, and 1 microphone in..
