A few questions... what speed is your connection at? Are you sitting too far away from the router or are between too many walls causing your signal to degrade? Are there devices around the router or inbetween you and the router that might cause interference?
If you hook the computer up with a wired connection, does it speed up? Do you have an 802.11G network card? Let us know a bit more and we'll do our best |

Is it true wireless internet, or just an access point you plugged into your cable modem connection?

k, well the only way that a 802.11g card would speed you up is if you had a 802.11g Accesspoint / Router. Now, when you get a connection check the status of it and see what the rated speed is at, I can get all the way from one side of my house to the other (50ft house) and my signel is from 11Mbps (1ft away from the router) to 2Mbps at the far end of the house. This is using a Toshiba intergrated 802.11b card and a Microsoft MN-700 802.11g Router. Let us know the Router / Accesspoint your using, and the information on the status page relating to speed, that will narrow the problem down a bit.

I have a new Dell laptop also(Inspiron 8600) and a D-link "Extreme" router that are both 802.11g compliant. I'm usually less than 30' from the AP through 1 wall at a time, (small apartment) and Network Properties says the connection should be 54 kbps, but my downloads often come in just over 100 kbps. I would recommend D-link to anyone, even I could set it up! (I'm no expert, I just read a few reviews, bought the thing, and set it up (I RTFM). The hardest part was the connection properties and choosing the encryption method.)
Edited by skinbag to clarify- The 802.11g standard blows 802.11b away! Besides the 11->54 kbps upgrade there are methods like D-Link's "Extreme" that use 802.11g but are above the standard. My router (DI-624) was sooooo worth the $. If you plan to surf in your room off of Dad's computer, it's money well spent. I have Charter cable, and never had to call them, so I'm not sure about "calling Cox". -No pun intended. Last edited by skinbag; 02-23-2004 at 06:22 AM.. |

just a guess, but have you checked your machines for adware/spyware/viruses? if everything's connected and working but slow, maybe you don't have a connection problem after all... it could just be the bad stuff slowing you down.
