Need Answers About Networks?

hey, if anyone needs any questions answered about basic networking whether it's for computers, phones, or whatever, you can ask me and i will try to answer them for you.

wonderful, thanks for your offer.

you're welcome

here is one for you.

I have a cisco shop. Which routing protocols should i be using?

1) OSPF

2) RIP

3) CDP

CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) isn't a routing protocol. It is used to find information about adjacent devices not make routing decisions. Don't have any experience actually using either protocol so can't answer your question.

Thanks man. I was hoping someone was going to finally pass that test....

I'd go with OSPF...

Been trying to get my boss to let me replace static routes (ugh...) on our network that has about 12 routers with OSPF....

Mephisto2 04-14-2004 06:14 PM

EIGRP, whilst a "Cisco standard" is widely used across the industry.

OSPF has its own implementation problems.

Thanks guys.

We are trying to weed out our Nortel routers and get away from RIP2, we are starting to use OSPF as well as IGRP. Defining the areas for OSPF is fairly easy. We too have WAY too many static routes in which are a pain in the ass....

4 of us, support a global network that spans from the Americas, South America, Canada, Alaska, Asia-Pacific, and even in freakin Saudi! My primary role is firewall/security. Just trying to help some implementation out on our Cisco conversion.

Ok I have one...
I have an AMD Athlon xp 2500+ with an Asus A7N8X-X m/b and a HP laserjet 3330 printer/fax/copier plugged in to the serial port on my rig which is running Winxp home SP1. I have to use serial because I dont have firewire.

I also have 2 laptops, a compaq Evo N800c and a Dell Latitude both running win2k SP4. I have already enabled "share" on all the cpus for the printer.

I am having difficulty printing from either of the laptops atm. The error is not specific either, just sez that there was an error printing the doc. And printer IS in fact shared, all settings are correct.

Secondly, I can't seem to access the other cpus from this one. i.e. when I go to network connections, and click the other cpus, it prompts me for a username and password. I put in the correct info, I thought. A user that has rights on that cpu with their password.

Do I need to assign an IP to the printer?
The router that I use is a DI-604 and there arent any connections on the back that I can think of...

Well first, according to the specs of that printer, it has a parallel port and a USB port. Second, you can't assign the printer itself an IP address, because the model of printer you mention does not have an IP stack, and doesn't know what a network is.

Now, you say all the settings are correct, but if they were, you'd be able to print. Did you actualy add this pinter to both of the client systems? Are you running a firewall on the system hosting the printer?

tkkfan 04-23-2004 09:51 AM

Yea, the printer is on both client systems. No, the firewall is on the router

I don't know, then.
