AGP and Athlon XP retiring?

I was just reading the roadmaps for SiS and VIA chipsets for 2004. I'm starting to think that both the AGP and Athlon XPs will probably not be used more then a year or two more for mainstream use.

What are you guys thinking about this? Going to wait for the new technologies to get a firm foothold and go for them later or going to stay with the AGP and Athlon XP still?

In regards to the Athlon XP, yeah, I'm pretty sure that will be phased out shortly - AMD has really been pushing their Athlon 64 chip lately, and with good reason (it rocks ). I'm just hoping that prices will go down, which they most likely will. Forgive my ignorance though, but what would AGP be replaced with?

It's not a really a question of what AGP would be replaced with. It's going to be replaced with PCI Express. It will be faster than 8x AGP. AGP slots will be rendered useless basically.

But the thing really isn't that its going to be all changed its going to be all at the same time. With DDRII now its going to be even crazier. Things are going to cost quite a lot for a bit don't you think?

Wouldn't there be an AGP 16X or 32X or even 64X? I bet even the 16X could beat the shit out of PCI Express.

Definitely ... with all the new stuff coming out, for the next few months if you buy a computer under $2000 (canadian), or probably even more, it will become obsolete within about a month. And I'm not exaggerating, as far as I know

This is very good though because I like my computers being so fast they make you

People tend to mix up the term "obsolete" with the phrase "not the best."

An Athlon XP Barton 2500+ and the Abit NF7-S motherboard with a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra came out a solid year ago. Are they obsolete? Ha ha, no way. Are they not the best? Yeah, there's definitely better hardware out there. My Athlon XP 1900+ with PC2100 RAM and GeForce 4 TI4200 is not obsolete, and it's two years old now. Computers aren't obsolete in the gaming industry until 3 years down the road usually (if bought when the hardware was at its best).

Couln't possible agree more. No one is going "obselete" like in the 90's. Hardware is generally so far advanced compared to software (unlike the 90's) that performance is really noticeable these days mainly on the bleeding edge and nowhere else.

I have BF1942 running on my 450mHz PIII with 256mb of PC100 RAM. Works fine most of the time, but it does get a bit slow when there are a lot of bots. Net play is out of the question.

yeah, I ran it on my old 533 MHz Celeron with a TNT2. All the graphics turned down, lowest resolution. Still ran like hell

I got Battlefield 1942 to run on my 1983 Timex digital watch.

Regarding AGP, I don't really see it going away on motherboards for another 3 years. Just think how long it took ISA to go away when PCI became the hottest thing!

yea, AGP will take a while to go away. think of how many agp graphics cards are out htere. besides, who would spend another several hundred dollars to buy a new gf card and mobo when they can easily keep their current agp graphics card that will run most games just fine. i mean, really, do you need 200+ fps in any game?

I would perfer to wait and use AGP 16x when and if it comes out. Had a lot of bad experiences with PCI video cards and in my mind it extends as problems with PCI express too

I tried running BF1942 on my 1.6ghz P4 with a TNT2, and I couldn't get it to work . All I saw was black and blue, and the main reason I got a Radeon 7500 was to play BF1942
