P III Xeon Question
I am asking this question here for a friend, because I cannot think of a good answer to give him, and I would like to appear smarter.
Would a Dual 550Mhz P3 Xeon, 1gig pc266 RAM, 4X AGP...Bla Bla Bla.. system perform better on games like CounterStrike, C&C Generals and the like than an AMD XP 2000, 512 PC2100? Both using a Radeon 9600 128MB. Looking at both system spects I cannot give him a good answer, it seems that where the AMD system lacks the P3 system excels, and vice versa... if you need more system spects to answer, then let me know!

The Athlon would annihilate it. The ONLY PC game that takes full advantage of dual processors is Quake 3. The Athlon would beat its ass. That's not even counting the fact that the dual Xeons only total to 1100 MHz whereas the XP 2000+ is nearly 1.7 Ghz with DDR RAM. I'd say the XP would be almost twice as powerful as the dual Xeon.

Thanks, those were my feelings, but having never delt with the Xeon processors, I really had no idea of it's capablities. Thanks Lasereth, you must stalk this board 24/7, every time I post a question, you are always the first to answer... Way to be!

Even quake III doesn't take "full" advantage of dual cpu setups. I have 4 Dual CPU machines - and have run Quake III with r_smp 1 (which turns on support for smp) and I usually only got a difference of about 2-5 fps on my benchmarks - and sometimes it was for the worse. I haven't seen any games really take advantage of it yet. Although, I did read that Unreal Tournament 2003 will offload sound processing to the second cpu if present - but I haven't run benches to confirm this. My dual CPU setups range from Dual PIII 733 to Dual 2.8 Xeons. Oh yeah, to restate what Lasereth said, the Athlon would trash that slow dual setup in gaming.
