Home Entertainment Sound Systems

I am starting to look at Home enteratinment Sound Systems. Are there any recommendations out there? I am leaning toward getting Bose Speakers. What do you think?

Seriously dude, you can do better for your dollar than Bose. If you want recommendations, you should give an indication as to what your budget might be.

jujueye 02-02-2004 05:21 PM

Hey - I'll jump in for Brandon:

No Bose, my friend. Don't believe the hype regarding Bose. They spend incredible amounts of money on advertising, yet fail to advertise in places like....Stereophile. Isn't that strange!

Yeah, first off you need to give us a rough estimate.
Next, you should peruse this very board (already some answers here!)
Then...if that doesn't steer you in the right direction, FIRE AWAY!

I would also recommend http://www.audioasylum.com if you have some time for browsing postings. Lots and lots to learn there.

By the way, do you just want speakers, or a whole system?

I had a really busy day at work, and didn't have a chance to get on. Now lets get down to brass tacks.

If you want your music to be reproduced flat and lifeless, then more power to you. If you buy Bose speakers, myself, jujueye, and ubertuber will personally clobber you over the head with a herring. Bose speakers are poorly constructed, use cheap components, and their sound is a reflection of this. Their woofer cones for one, are a horrendously cheap paper feeling cone with a paper surround. Their trademark lack of high frequency extension can also be attributed to their paper tweeter cones. Yes, tweeter cones, not domes like you would find in a real speaker.

Now.... to recap..... and lets all sing together....

**no highs, no lows, it must be Bose!**

I would go with Boston Accustics or PSB Speakers.

Well, I don't have a herring right close....but I'll find a hammer in it's place.........

I'd definitely concur on the PSB's, but I'm not a fan of Boston. They seem a bit low frequency challenged. Maybe I'm just spoiled by my Definitives and their transmission line cabinets.....

jujueye 02-04-2004 04:07 PM

PSB is a good brand. I can't imagin why they haven't had more press lately, but I know the Gold Stratus i from a few years back was a great speaker. Well-priced and good sounding.

What size of speaker are you looking for? Also, let us know what your price range is. Minimonitors? Monitors? Floorstanding? Giant eat-your-room-alive speakers?

The Platinum T8's were reviewed very highly by Stereophile recently. Only beef was that they were a bit forceful in the 80-160Hz range, its sort of to be expected, as they use 3 8" woofers. I just got access to them, too. A pair of them might find their way into my system....

miko 02-05-2004 02:20 PM

I just literally received these from fedex about an hour ago!
www.aperionaudio.com
Read alll the amazing reviews, their 30 day return policy, and their LOW prices for what is supposed to be some great quality speakers right up there with B&W and M&K. I'll report back after I've had a good listen to my set. :)

Oh, and like others have said. Stay far away from BOSE. And stay away from MONSTER cables. Both are WAY overpriced. Acoustic Research makes some pretty nice cable for half the price! Best Buy sells them.

Parker 02-08-2004 01:57 PM

Sorry I did not respond sooner. My computer network was shut down, but anyway thank you for the advice. As you probably can tell that I am not very knowledgable on speakers, but I am going to take your advice and stay away from BOSE Speakers. I am know leaning toward PSB Speakers, but if I have more questions I will send a reply. Thank you.
