First off, 256 MB of RAM on a videocard doesn't mean it's the best. There are 256 MB GeForce FX 5200 Ultra and FX 5600 Ultras out there, and they are most certainly not the best.
Secondly, name a price range, and I'll give ya my opinion on which card is the best for the money. -Lasereth

For $200, I'd get a GeForce FX 5900, hands down. Not the SE or the Ultra or the XT...just the regular.

NewEgg has a PowerColor Radeon 9700 Pro on sale for $200. That'd be a good investment, even though I've heard very bad things about PowerColor. The reason I say it's a good investment is the customer reviews -- 5 stars after a ton of reviews.

If you want to spend $300 or a bit higher, go for the Radeon 9800 Pro or the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra. Both cards are very, very powerful for around that price (the FX 5900 Ultra is a bit over $300; the Radeon 9800 Pro can be found for a good bit under $300).

The absolute best are the ATI Radeon 9800 XT and the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra. Both of those excel in different areas from each other, so it's hard to say which is the best. Generally speaking, they're the top two best videocards on the market.

I wouldn't buy that. The only semi-worthy FX midrange card is the FX 5700 Ultra if ya ask me. I don't care how cheap it is -- that card can simply be beat by GeForce 4 TI series and for cheaper. If it were...say, $80, then I might get it. If you truly want a GeForce FX 5600, at least get the Ultra version for a few dollars more.
*EDIT* NewEgg has the GeForce FX 5600 Ultra for $125. That TigerDirect link is a ripoff. -Lasereth
