My xbox is modded, using no modchip..
Go to http://www.xbox-scene.com
Anything you want to know is there.
If you want to consider the no-modchip mod like me, read info about TSOP flashing.
Otherwise, there's tons of modchip info there too.

I've modded mine with a modchip. I recommend the Xecuter Lite version. Costs about $35 US. There is a solderless version for about $20 more, but if you are comfortable soldering its pretty easy. Like the previous guy said, visit www.xbox-scene.com, they have the best info and that's where I learned to do everything.

I've read up a bit about it, I'm too damned scared to actually do it though, is quite a big investment to gamble with.

the newest executer bios allows you alot more protection when it comes to live, so even if you accidently connect with the modchip on and a burnt or hd game playing, they cant see you.

to play on live, all you need is a which on the d0 wire which basically is an on/off switch for the modchip, with it on, powers up modded, off, powers up stock.

follow the directions out there, its not really that risky.

But let me warn you... it may destroy your sense of gaming ownership.

Make sure you remember how much time was put into creating these games, please dont just copy, support the industry.

Make sure you read EVERYTHING like 10 times until you know it. Read the forums on xbox-scene.com constantly. Understand the programs out there, understand how to do everything, save all diagrams or pictures you come across onto your HDD. Ask people in the forums for suggestions. Don't just jump into this thinking it's going to be a 20 minute job. Take your time and do it right. If you're going to be soldering and you don't have much experience, find an old computer part like a modem or something you don't need anymore and practice soldering wires to it. Practice makes perfect, and having experience pays off. I'm sure you don't want to go blow another $180 on a new unit. Good luck.

There is soldering involved? Cool! Nothing better than an evening of inhaling solder fumes.

Yeah, practice a lot with the soldering. Keep the heat low, and as soon as it begins to flow, remove the iron. Don't blow on the joint, for God's sake, its not good for it.

Check out this tutorial for soldering. Really, really useful from a known good source. http://www.geocities.com/etforeplay/foreplay2.html

Incidentally, the Foreplay kit they refer to is a Do It Yourself stereo preamplifier that can be built from a kit.

isn't there a disc you can buy that enables you to do the same stuff, without actually opening your box?

Nope. Currently the only solution to run unsigned code on XBOX is to install a modchip.

No. Actually you can by using a memory card with a certain save on mechassult. www.xbox-scene.com . It isn't a disc that you can buy, but it IS unsigned code, and it will let you run evoX like a modded xbox can.

Yeah there is one for Bond too, but you still have to open the hard drive to put in the new hard drive anyways, so i would suggest the chip.

I didn't even want an xbox until after I modded my brothers. I used the no-solder version of the executioner lite 2.3b modchip. It was simple to install. All you need to do is open the xbox remove the dvd and hard drive and then unscrew a screw on the motherboard. You then screw the modchip in where you removed the screw. Then turn on the xbox and wiggle the modchip until the green light turns on letting you know its aligned right. After that I threw in a 160 gb hard drive and installed evo-x.

I can now rip any xbox game to the hard drive. Also I have every game for the snes, nes, genesis, tg16, n64, gameboy, megadrive and all mame roms installed.

I'd suggest that anybody with an xbox get modchip installed. If you don't like soldering just use the no solder model. Its a cinch to install. If you are having trouble installing evo-x just get the slayer 2.5 evo-x install cd. It pretty much automates the process of setting up the software.

I have some buddies that work at MS (Xbox and Bungie) and both have stated you DON"T want to get caught w/ a modded box.
Not sure how they ban you (IP or System Serial#) but both are reported to MS every time you sign in. Can you get away with an oops? Maybe.. Is it worth a lifetime ban? Not for me. Make sure to keep the modded box off Live.

If you choose to not install a mod chip you currently CANNOT use xbox live...upon connection to the service; microsoft automatically updates the bios with some patches which would undo your hacks to the operating system. I currently have a no modchip modded xbox with a new 60 gig hard drive in it. Its WELL worth the time invested. heeh i just rent games and rip em WOOT!

MS bans your xbox's eeprom. It's basically a serial number. If you get banned, you can get a new eeprom from another xbox (as long as it's not planning to go on xbox live). The process of replacing your eeprom is a lot of extra work though that can easily be screwed up. However if you happen to get banned, some people sell unbanned eeprom's in at XBox-Scene.com in the BST section of the forum. Generally cost about $10 each.

I have a modchip (Xecutor Lite 2.3) on my xbox, and can play online with my PURCHASED games by turning off the modchip first. There's no way for MS to detect whether you have the modchip installed or not if you turn it off before turning on the xbox if you want to play on live. Then your xbox acts just like a normal xbox.

[Edit]
I just remember that you can play many games with the modchip on if you use XBConnect - http://www.xbconnect.com/ What this does is fools your xbox into thinking that your computer is another xbox. Then you connect to your computer via an xbox-link game, and then your computer communicates with other people's computers which are connected to their xboxes... basically, you can play xbox-link games over the internet. It works pretty well [/Edit]

I installed an xbox and matrix modchip: time invovled : maybe two hours and an extra hour for HD install and ftping over old files. Costs: Modchip was $80 CDN back when it was the latest and greatest and a 40 gig HD I had laying around. Payoff: damn well worth it.
