AGP Speed Stuck at 2x

I know I've been asking a lot of questions on this board lately, but here's another one.

My AGP speed is stuck at 2x. I tried changing the BIOS from "auto" to 4x, but it's still running at 2x, according to the ATI panel in display settings and Sisoft Sandra 2004 Pro. Before that, I was using another board, but the same model and BIOS version, and it ran at 4x fine.

The specs that may matter:
Asus A7V8X-X (Bios revision 1006. Updating is not an option, due to a past bad experience.
Cheap ATI Radeon 9000 non-pro
Windows 2000 Pro
Latest VIA 4 in 1s and ATI Catalyst drivers

That motherboard is capable of 8x. As much as you hate it, a bios update is probably the only solution.

I used the same motherboard model with the same BIOS version, and AGP 4x worked fine. However, that one originally came with 1005 and I updated it to 1006. That went fine, but when I tried to update it to 1007 a few months later, the update went bad and I had to RMA the board to Newegg.

The Radeon 9000 definitely supports 4x AGP. Before I replaced the motherboard, that was the speed that it worked at.

I had the same problem just a few weeks ago. I have a MSI Mobo, I went to the website and downloaded a video update for the motherboard that enabled the 8x for my video card. I took a quick look @ the Asus website but couldnt see anything at first glance. Check it out for a similar patch for the video for your motherboard.

Unfortunately, there is no such patch for my motherboard on the Asus site.

you HAVE installed the AGP driver off the disc that came with the mobo right?

Beyond that, if it worked before, and the new one doesn't, I would guess bad mobo - - this mobo is a decent board (I have it myself) but it's very well known for having strange problems that require bios updates to clear up.
