One comp. is hot- one is cold?????
 

I built two computers in the last two months. One computer runs very hot and one is cool.
First the hot.

When I put my hand behind this computer the air blowing out the back is hot like a hair dryer. It warms my 22’ by 14’ living room.

When I put my hand behind this computer I almost soiled myself. The air blowing out the back is cool. I mean the same temp. as if the fan was not even connected to a computer.

WELL THERE IT IS. Both run XP pro. Both cases are almost identical and have one 80mm fan blowing in the bottom front and one 80mm fan blowing out the top back. ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ABOUT WHY ONE RUNS COOL AND ONE RUNS HOT?

the 2200 is probably a tbred b core, which means it naturally runs a LOT cooler then your 1700.

i.e. my old athlon 1800 used to hover around 55 deg C (from what i remember). the new athlon 1800 i have (with a tbred core) hovers at around 30-35 deg C.

[ edit ]: i should also add that the new 1800 i have runs at that temp OC'ed to speeds equivalent of a 2100 or a 2200, i forget.

both values are with stock cooling, one case fan on, and with the same case.

Do they have the same power supply? diffrent power supplys give off diffrent amounts of heat. Also are the mother boards the same chip set? It also could be your GeForce 2, I have a GeForce 2 MX and it runs cool, but I also have a GeForce 256 and it runs hot. What temps do the 2 CPU's run at? I have a AMD 1700XP and have it over clocker to 1602 Mhz and have a Volcano 7 on it and it run around 115F.

I agree with 014real. I'd look at the power supply first.

use a monitoring program (like mother board monitor) to check the CPU temp, that shoudl show if its geting to hot. also had drives can put off a lot of heat

The CD that comes with the Asus MB contains a system monitoring program called Asus Probe. It shows everything on your system from voltages to fan speed and temps. I have the same board with a 2500 Barton, I run at about 40C, with the fans spinning around 2100- 2400 RPMS.

Well, one of them is running a hot processor, a hot Hard disk, and hot memory. The other one is running a relatively cool processor, cool hard disk, and cool memory.

I suggest adding an intake fan to blow over your disk, and at least one more exhaust fan. Also, check to make sure that there's proper airflow through the system.

A final note, Arctic silver blew up my last processor because I didn't know how to apply it properly. You want an extremely thin layer on the chip, because the thermal qualities of Arctic silver is kind of like wool in the summer. The thinner it is the less you sweat.

I remember buying my 2200 because it had a new architecture that kept it cooler, .13 micron I think.

Also some boards tell you the temp of the cpu core, while some tell you the temp around the core.

What differences is this? It's almost like feeling the hot air around a sauce pan, and actually touching a sauce pan.

If you want to make sure if it's actually running hotter. Do a test and put the two chips on one of those two motherboards and see the temp differences then.

This might be a stupid question, but did you clean off the heatsink before you applied the Arctic Silver? Make sure it's clean, and try to get the THINNEST possible layer of AS between the heatsink and the core.
