Memory Cards
CF, SD, xD, Sony Stick, etc. etc...
Which ones do you like and why? I don't really have too much experience with them.. my mp3 player uses SD cards, and my digital camera uses CF.. but are there different levels of say, quality and/or reliability? The only differences I've really noticed are physical size, and price for equivalent storage capacity. |
One usually doesnt have a choice, you use whatever your equipment runs--for most cameras is is CF. I will say that I dont like the Sony Stick--a proprietary solution that only works in one brand of device is usually not a good solution.

My digital camera uses xD, I love it, it has a very fast transfer rate, and I have had no problem with the cards whatsoever.

I use SD for my Palm, wife's iPaq, and Pentax Optio S.
SmartMedia (ugh) for my Olympus C-3000Z. I despise Sony's Memory Stick. |
so long as the tool works i don't care what it is, so i have no issue with the memory stick.
SD for the Palm and MP3 player. Smart Media for the Olympus 2020z |
There are differences in transfer speed, I believe. My camera won't take Sandisk SD cards over 128mb because they are too slow. Beyond 128mb, I have to use Panasonic cards because they are rated much faster than Sandisk and other "lower quality" brands.
Which reminds me, I have a new 256mb Sandisk SD card if anyone wants to buy it off me... |

Same thing applies to SmartMedia. I think the latest Olympus cameras (high-end) will take CompactFlash as well as xD. |
Compact Flash.. all of my cams use it as well as my ipaq.

Yea, I have some reservations about the sony stick too, just because it's only available to use in Sony products.

I like xD. So small and cute :o
( i use a 64 mb in my Olympus D-560 zoom) |
My Samsung Digital Camcorder actually uses Memory Stick for taking stills. Works out ok, but the quality of the stills is crap compared to what I can get from taking screen caps from the video. My digital still camera uses compact flash, and I've never encountered any problems. Transfer rate isnt that high, but it still works fine. I just paid $35 for a 128 meg compact flash card.
