need help connecting my new speakers
 

So, my dad says to me, "Mom doesn't like my speakers. They're too big for the living room. If you can find a use for them, feel free. They're very nice... $800 too."

I think I just need to buy a converter box where I slip in the split pair audio cable from the speakers and connect it to the back of my TV. Is an amplifier applicable and even necessary? Am I missing anything?

My sister is gonna flip out when she sees this. She sleeps in the next room.

ya, an analog adaptor is prolly necessary for that tv, i know one is needed for a computer

An amplifier is 100% necessary. Even if the tv has speaker out jacks on it, the power out of said jacks is not near enough to drive floorstanding speakers. You should run audio cables from the audio output on the back of your tv to an audio input on your receiver. Hope that helps....

What Brandon said. Get an amp, or wreck the speakers. You can get amps pretty cheaply at Best Buy. less than $400 buys you a decent brand with a good deal of power.

Right. You need a reciever, otherwise where would they get power from? They don't have an amp.

Just go to your local Best Buy and check out their recievers. There's a million things to look for, but I guess it depends on what you want. If you want to expand to a real surround system eventually then get a good reciever that can handle a 5.1 or 6.1 set-up. Trust me, you'll want it eventually.

Yeah, go for a receiver or integrated amplifier (this has no readio tuner on it.) Easily the easiest way to screw up a speaker is to feed it too little power and distorted sound. Yeah, 100 watts would be fine.

So now you're in for $800 + the receiver. Welcome to the world of audio...!!! Now you'll want the DVD player, the CD player....Oh, hey, that turntable looks cool!

p.s. Your poor dad. I know I am so lucky being able to keep speakers like that in my front room. Very, very lucky.
