Onboard sound messing up my MIDI
I’m using an echo mia for my music production audio, but I’m also using my onboard, built in sound card for general computer audio with my Altec spekers. Here’s my problem:
While setting up midi in Cubase SX, I go to options-midi-system and the input is just fine and is using Midex 8 (an external 8x8 midi interface). However the output is listed as Microsoft GS Wavetable and won’t stay selected when I change it to Midex 8. I found this bugger in device manager under “Intel …97 Audio Controller.” Double clicking it reveals it’s functions and one is midi controller (not sure why it even has this) I disabled it, restarted, and everything is fine with the midi setup now in Cubase. However my computer audio isn’t working anymore. When I disabled the midi portion of the card, the whole card disables. I tried uninstalling the midi part and restarted, but it didn’t actually uninstall it. What gives? Thanks for any help guys -Tim edit: Just went into bios-intergrated peripherals and disabled the onboard MIDI. Didn't do anything as far as disabling the Midi in the device manager...

I'd almost bet that it's got something to with the on-board sound not being either adequate or compatible. Sounds like you're doing some mildly advanced stuff that you would WANT a higher end sound card. They sound better overall anyways, and use up less CPU resources.

I am no computer genius like these guys but I might be of some help since I have done a good amount of work with cubase and I do a lot of work with midi. First I would try turning the audio controller back on just to see if you get your sound back (I dont know if you can just disable the midi part. I think it might actually disable the whole card) Also, can you describe your setup so I can tell what role your pc plays?

DEI7- The Echo Mia card is a high end soundcard! I'm just looking for ways to get my onboard sound to stop messing with my production software.
Zfleebin- I was able to turn the onboard soundcard back on and get everything running. I could theoretically turn it on and off when I switched between computer sound/music production sound but that would be a pain because it requires restarting the computer. I could also use my monitors for the computer sounds but I don't like using them when I don't need to and have a decent speaker setup for the computer's sounds. My setup includes a steinberg 8x8 external midi interface, an Echo Mia via a PCI slot, and a Gigabyte 8ihxp motherboard with onboard audio. I'm running all my audio through a Mackie mixer then into the Echo Mia via 1/4 inch in's. The PC is running Cubase and I'm (going to be) doing all my midi and audio work on it. I don't think you need to know about anything else....? let me know if so! Thanks -Tim

After hearing that setup I am confused where your sending the midi to. Do you have an external synth or sequencer that you are programming using the pc? or or is your output just moving the midi between the echo mia and the motherboard? I guess I am just trying to understand why your using the midi output.

I need the software to send midi out to controll the midi devices (Nord 2, Korg MS2000) of course! The out in Cubase has it being sent to something called Microsoft Wavetable GS and I need it to go to Steinberg 8x8 Midex (external interface to the keyboards) but the onboard audio card is trying to controll the midi too.
