i dont know if i'd pay that much.

i'd personally pay about 15-1700 for a pc like that.

but you can prolly build one for cheaper than that.

Where did you get those prices? I cant believe the difference in price. Thanks for that it seems I would have made a bad decision.

Intel CPUs are over-hyped and overpriced. Get an Athlon XP 2600+ or 2700+ and a motherboard with the nForce 2 chipset for equal or better performance.

Well I like the case, so I am defintely keeping that. But I was also thinking about switching to AMD, since P4 seems to be the worse product.

nForce2 chipset?

Intel is not worse....just more expensive.

Nforce2 = dual channel ddr, dsp & dual mac built into south bridge (6 chan audio + dual ethernet), plus a variety of technical tidbits....read an article.

You will save a lot of money for the same performance with AMD. But a top-end Intel system (using Intels latest stuff)will usually outperform a top-end AMD.

Yea...those are awesome chips.

I dont know, though, if the extra $200 is worth it over the XP 3000.

For sure, let us know how it is.

Yeah, the nForce2 is currently the best chipset for an AMD platform.

FYI, AMD is about to increase the FSB to 400MHz in the first half of this month with the release of the Athlon XP 3200+.

Nice system. Though I would consider one of the new Shuttle XPC systems. Look at newegg -> barebone systems -> shuttle -> and the last system. Tell me that ain't sweet.
Audigy is overrated imho. Save yourself a couple of bucks. Corsairs good but prefer the cheaper Crucial unless you plan to overclock.

The barebone systems got the most amazing heatsink i've ever seen. I built one last night for a friend. Building another one for another next week. Cost of system - (amd 2200+ 1 gig ram) is a little over 400. he has some spare parts lying around. The sk41g has a 60 rebate at newegg.

I really hate it when people quote Pricewatch prices. It completely ignores the reputation of the merchant not to mention any shipping or tax that may be included. Price all the parts out from a store like newegg.com or mwave.com and then look at the price difference to get a good idea of the type of deal youre getting. Also consider if this computer comes with 24-hr real live tech support and wheter or not you'll actually use it.

The P4PE is a great board, but on a dated chipset.

The 845 chipset, though spectacular, is on it's last leg.

Recently the 875 Chipset came out, and with boards like the Asus pc800 and my person favorite, the IC7 from Abit...you will get more bang for you buck going wiht a canterwood (875)

Intels cost more, but you get a lot of usual features that may not be available to amd like :

- hyper threading (it makes a massive differences, with it I encode Divx's at 82fps, compared to 60 with it disabled)

- Thermal Throttling. If you cpu gets hot, or the heatsink fan dies, your p4 will begin to throttle down it's speed until it get's back into proper temp ranges. This prevents burn up of the chip (common with AMD) while also giving you more uptime (important in a server environment).

-Advance Instructions sets like..shit I forgot the acronym. Basically instructions encoded into the core to speed certain applications. Mind you Amd also has things like 3Dnow, but Intel tends to have a higher amount. Because of Intels voice in the community, companies follow. I personally remember after intel released the p3, Adobe released a patch for the new cpu and some things were 40% faster.

Now mind you, I'm not wanting to start a flame war..far from that. Yet I can't escape the ubiquitous car analogies when talking about computers. Athlon is like toyota camry V6, while intel is like a lexus Es300. Both drive, both have the same speed, but Intel has more features thus a higher price tag. The most important thing though is both work, and work great. (For you American or European car lovers, replace analogy with comparable models.)

Me personally, I have both machines, but I do everything on my p4, cause I work photoshop.

Hope this helps man, ditch the p4pe and grab an IC7.

The corsair would rule on the 875 chipset.
