Numbering massive amounts of file names?

Is there any easy way to make a list of file names like a program or something (for pc/winxppro) for numbering items?

i.e. I have a list of 400 pics, I want to label them w001.jpg to w400.jpg

Does that make sense?
Does anyone know of any programs that do that?
or an easier way to do that?

And also what if the files aren't stored locally, i.e. tfproject.org/images/001.jpg

If I wanted to put those pictures in a post, is there an easier way to do it other than renumbering it all by hand?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I thank everyone in advance for their help!

who... I don't know the commands for windows, but if they were on an *nix machine I could write you a quicky script to re-name em... I think. shouldn't be THAT hard. someone who's more familiar w/ the windows world should be able to help ya. :)

RelaX 01-10-2004 12:14 AM

Like cheerios, I don't have the windows code, but a little C prog shouldn't have too much trouble with it I guess...
Don't ask me to write it though, I know almost nothing about C, my expertise is Java and PHP and I have no idea how it could be done in Java.
hmm... PHP might work....

Anyway, I'm sure there are progs like that out there already. Try google.

As for the multiple pics from another URL, the titty board posting thingee is gone :(
I wrote a PHP script once that did about the same, if you want you can have that but you'd have to find PHP enabled hosting.

I'm not being very helpfull am I?

ya ill write a program for you, give me a sec ill place a link here

http://abaddon01.no-ip.info:8081/1/rename.zip

ok download, unzip and instal

then select the folder that the files are in (all files inside will be changed)

then type the prefic for the file name (you want 'w' for what you do no quotes)

then click the do it button and it will rename them all.

some warning it will do it to all jpegs in teh folder so if you are worried about mistacks back it up, there is no undo.

good luck let me know if there is another thing you need.

Wow, everyone thanks a lot, this is great, and much more than I expected, thanks for everyone's help especially Dilbert and Ashton.

One more quick question, is it possible to create a list of files without actually having the files?

Another answer to your first question is ACDSee 5 - it's got a "batch rename" facility that allows you to add a series of numbers to the end or start of the existing filenames, or just rename them all numerically, or alphanumerically - very useful.

Second question, I'm not sure what you mean. What are you actually trying to do? sorry!

Two more cents to add:

UltraRenamer (free)
ShellToys XP (shareware)

Will do a gazillion things to rename files including the numbering that you need.

I suppose you mean creating a list of JPG. URL's in numerical order? If that's what you mean all you have to do is copy/paste this into notepad then save it, when you want to create a URL list you open the file.... copy the # then click edit/replace, paste the # into 'find what' and type the URL into "replace with" click 'replace all'. Notepad will remove the # and add the URL to each of the numbers.

He He He..... this is my trick for snatching pic's from sites that think they're sneaky and are set so most downloaders like Ezpic's & Express Webpic's won't work...... I just make my own set of URL's and load the file into HTTrack, HTTrack downloads each pic just as if you were at the site clicking and saving them one at a time. By using 100 pic's as a base set of numbers you are sure to get the whole set...... although a have another file that goes to 200 just in case there's more than 100. :D
