Some people use proxies for protection, but most people use them for privacy--if you route through an anonymous proxy, you are essentially invisible.
For protection, I would recommend installing a good personal firewall. It is much easier to maintain, and just as effective. If you are looking for anonymity, I dont know much other than what I just told you. Sorry

You'll have to change your proxy often because they "wear out" with use.

Question/suggestion here...
By using a utility (i.e. ProxyPal, which I've got installed here), do you need to keep a list or does that automatically rotate 'em for you?

I have never used a web proxy, just a local one, it seems like it would solw your connection down substantially, having to go through the one computer for every request, right?
Just buy another barebones computer and set that up for internet sharing, and install your firewall and proxy there, hell add a huge HDD and make it an Mp3 server... have more that one computer in the house it the way to go! ~Crack

as for speeds, it is only noticable when you are downloading stuff. when browsing pics, there is hardly a difference on a good proxy server. |
