Tangent Computers

One of my top choices for college is the University of Dayton.
UD requires a laptop purchased through them with 3 options: UD Value Notebook, UD Notebook, and UD Power Notebook.

The UD Power Notebook has:

1.7 GHz Intel Centrino
1 GB DDR-SDRAM
80 GB HDD
AGP 64MB Video Card
15" TFT SXGA+ Display
Ethernet card/Modem/Wi-Fi Card
CD-RW/DVD Optical Drive
Touchpad
Windows XP Profession
Office XP Professional
Frontpage 2002
Lotus software
Symantec Anti-virus software
Battery/AC Adapter/Carrying Case
4 years On-Campus service/support
$1,999 + 7.5% tax or 67.34/mo for 36 months (around $300 extra to finance)

Good deal/Bad deal?
Any good/bad stories with Tangest computers?

for equivalent prices check out another site that does laptops... dell.com maybe...

i could understand a school requiring students to have laptops that meet certain requirements....
but imo its bullshit that you have to buy these specific laptops...

Well the high school that I am at now requires a laptop as well, but they only have one option available. Take it or leave the school was the policy. I can see from the standpoint of the administrators and tech guys to have the same computers. It makes things a whole lot easier especially when it comes to troubleshooting (ie. one kid has the exact same problem as another, you already know what it is). Happened a lot with our IBM Thinkpad R40's and a lot of the time they already knew what was wrong because someone else had the same problem. When you start mixing in brands/software/processors/memory it would be a major headache for the techies.

the deal sounds decent, although i wouldnt say its great.

it seems it'd pretty good bang for the buck.

cartmen34 12-29-2003 10:49 AM

I personally wouldn't go to a school that REQUIRES me to buy THEIR laptops...or else.

But hey, that's just me......
.....
...... *thinking about the deal some more*
......
...
Unless the computer is your to keep after your time at the school....Then it sounds like an ok deal to me.

it is your computer and you can keep it after the lease, I do believe. If you are kicked out or drop out, however, you must return it.

Nice specs for 2000.00, except for having to own licenses on office and lotus @ 1.7mhz.

Tangent also offers lifetime toll free tech support and other stuff.

Buutt. Nobody likes to be forced into something they have to pay for.

Any other benefit to going to Dayton? Cheerleader of your choice plus free chow and a prime parking spot?

Let us know what you decide, and good luck in your educational endeavor.

Well ... $2k is kinda steep but if you have to, then you must. I bought a Toshiba with similar spec's at Best Buy for $1.2k ....

It comes with all that software.

I was swaying on the decision on whether or not to get a laptop or a desktop for college (whichever one).
Pros for laptop:
Mobility (obvious)
Wireless campus (UD)
Small, can type on bed if I want
Cons:
More expensive
Not as easily upgradeable

I was going to build my own computer for college (desktop) but I guess I will have to settle for this. I am not a huge PC gamer (I do my gaming on my XBOX) so I need not worry about the graphics card.

P.S. We purchase the computers from Dayton (Dayton purchases them from Tangent) so the first week we move in (assuming I do in fact, attend UD) we receive our laptops. We don't have to trek to a Tangent store or buy one, it comes pre-loaded with all the software we need and all the software UD wants us to have on it.
