My friend has a problem with his homepage in that everytime he sets it, it automatically changes it to http:/// (that is correct, 3 back slashes) so nothing opens up.

Check spywareinfo.com. It sounds like this is a problem with spyware. Also, try another browser (firebird or something) and see if it does the same thing.
