Winamp 5
I've noticed they've released Winamp 5.
I didn't care for Winamp 3 and reverted back to version 2. Anyone formed an opinion on version 5 yet? Oh, and feel free to comment on why you think they skipped version 4.

I have *heard* that 5 is supposed to be the best of both worlds. I havent installed it yet, however. Like you, I switched back to 2.9, and dont have any reason to upgrade.

Winamp2 + winamp 3= Winamp 5. They skipped the version either to be cute or the influence of AOL is finally getting to them.
I don't think I'll bother. Winamp 2.91 does more than I need as it is.

I keep picturing a team of coders working late into the night on version 4 and after near lethal doses of caffeine finally saying "screw it...we're starting over." Either that, or the marketing team saying "listen, we've got to try and distance ourselves from the nightmare that was version 3...let's call it...Winamp Firebird! No, no...won't get it past the lawyers...how about Version 5!

I used winamp 5 when it was still beta, it takes all the good stuff from both 2 and 3 and creates a pretty darn good winamp.
And like cpugamerbb said, milkdrop is a cool addon if you have the resources.

I've been running 5 for a few days now. I really resisted installing a new version because 3 sucked so hard.
However, I'm pleasantly surprised with 5. I've been browsing all the skins and plugins on the website...some of them are pretty slick. I haven't seen the milkdrop plugin...now I have to find it. I think they skipped 4 because the stigma of being so close numerically to 3, which was complete and utter crap, would have been a beta killer for "version 4."

Hmm. I may upgrade to this later today or tomorrow. I'll let y'all know what I think about it then. Looks good, though.

I have my music sorted in folders and such, therefore all I need is something to simply play it, Winamp 2.9 is plenty for me. Never saw a point in the rest.

looked very briefly at an alpha of WA 5 but planning on staying with Foobar2000 here; really do not like the interface in WA and the lack of formatting strings.

I have a question for users who switched to Winamp 5 from version 2: what new features enticed you to switch?
For me, I installed 5 and kept it just because it wasn't worse than 2. I haven't used any new features or anything nor do I care for the visualizations. One thing though, I don't like the "modern" skins since I can't just hover over the main window and use the scroll wheel to in/decrease volume. I use the "activation follows mouse" setting in TweakUI so I'm already very used to doing so with the classic skins. |

I have been using 3 forever, I know it was horrible but it did the job. Well, I tried out 5 and holy crap! I really needed to upgrade. 3 was horrible!!!! Plus I can use the keyboard functions now!

i could never understand why people were so unhappy with winamp3... i never had any problems with it aside from a couple of crashes every now and then.
edit: I just downloaded and it's brilliant! i love the internet TV... still dunno what was wrong with 3. Last edited by flamingdog; 12-26-2003 at 03:16 PM.. |

winmamp 3 was mega bloatwarez, it takes WAY too long to load a playlist, especially one with quite a large number of mp3s in it. That and the fact that winamp3 doesn't have a jump button, which is essential if you have more than 500 mp3s and you really don't feel like scrolling through them all. It takes a good 15 seconds to load up winamp3, even on a modern p4-based system. That thing eats a bunch of system resources too, far too many for just a media player, especially one that is supposed to be light, yet incredibly robust, offering many options and stuff

downloaded winamp 5 a while back ago, it was pretty good, i loved the new skin they put in and all the options, but... having a piece of crap computer that i have, it didn't really work as well as i expected, but it worked alot better than winamp 3 (which killed my computer). so, i'm just sticking to good old 2.91. works fast, little resources, and hell, i'm just way too used to it =]
