KazaaLite is no more
It seems that Sharman networks wants to make sure we all have the official, spyware infested version of Kazaa on their machines.
LINK KaZaA shuts down KaZaA Lite By Jan Libbenga Posted: 08/12/2003 at 12:02 GMT This weekend users of KaZaA Lite K++ learned that almost every download site of the popular peer-to-peer file-sharing application had disappeared, including the links on its own home page. Sharman Networks, the company behind the original KaZaA, approached the ISP of every website that hosted the program and ordered its removal on grounds of copyright infringement. KaZaA Lite K++ is one of many light versions of the popular file-sharing program, but it wasn't developed by Sharman Networks. K++ was set up to offer a version free of the growing amount of spy and adware within the original KaZaA Media Desktop Program. In exchange for installing KaZaA Media Desktop without charge, the GAIN Network and Cydoor spyware will show you online ads. Remove these add-ins and KaZaA simply won’t work. KaZaA does offer an ad-free Plus version for $29.95, but naturally, most KaZaA users preferred the free versions widely available on the web. Although there are still plenty of sites where KaZaA Lite can be downloaded, the program may no longer function properly, according to some reports. KaZaA Lite is based on a KaZaA version prior to 2.5. Therefore a current supernode (a computer that contains a list of some of the files made available by other KaZaA users) in the KaZaA Network will not accept its shares. "The speed of the application will pummel to the ground and (drive KaZaA Lite) out of existence," a user notes. As expected, most KaZaA Lite fans are gnashing their teeth. Here is a typical attack: "This latest act from Sharman punctuates a long history of hypocrisy that involves the protection of their own intellectual property rights, yet blatantly ignoring the copyrights of others." Many KaZaA Lite users will probably divert to other KaZaA clones, such as GIFT, which connects to the Fasttrack, Openfasttrack, Opennapster (old Napster) and Gnutella networks. Still alive and kicking is also the Diet K add-in, which removes all spyware from the original KaZaA Desktop without crippling it. ® |
I haven't been able to get the new K++ to connect. I suppose that this is why. It doesn't bother me, there will always be some other system popping up. I guess I'll just have to go back to IRC warez groups and [heavy, obnoxious sarcasm] be more "1337" than everyone else.[/sarcasm]

KaZaA Lite still works fine. You simply can't download it anywhere (well, you can, but ya gotta hunt). My brother is connected right now with 3 million other people sharing 4 terabytes of data.

I hardly use Kazaa any more. I have better sources to get shit anyway. I just checked and it worked fine. *shrug*
|
Yeah, there are getting to be better sources. The thing that bugs me is that they appear to have removed their codec pack as well-I like that, it was one of the best out there.
|
k-lite works for me.
|
It is a sad day for computing, K++ was a fantastic piece of code.
I hope that another equally popular and versatile alternative surfaces soon. I will never put anything on my computer that has the word GAIN, Sharman, nor Cydoor, and I certainly wont pay for a program that is basically an escape from the ads. Forget it. |
works for me...

I have *cough*heard/visit*cough* of a DirectConnect hub (DC is another file sharing/chat server (download a client here: here) with 800 users and 15TB shared. That's an average of 19.2GB per user - which isn't that unrealistic (2/3 of the people are sharing less than that amount, actually). Given 3 million people, I'd have estimated a value in the petabytes, if not beyond. Edited to add missing words. |
Word on the street is that giFT is the new Kazaa. Connect to four filesharing networks at once? Yes please.

Yeah, my brother told me wrong, sorry about that. It's currently at 4.7 petabytes. -Lasereth |

giFT is a very good thing, and worth checking out. It's nice to be on 4 networks at once :) |
Holy crap - I must be retarded, but I have no idea what files to Download to make giFT run. I think I read the right stuff, but jeez - I can't make heads or tails of it. Sounds like something I wwould like to check out.

My K lite is still up and running ::knock on wood::
|
mIRC is far superior to Kazaa...you should try that...no spyware.
|
If you still want to download Kazaalite, the program, you can get it from oldversion.com
|
someone mentioned wanting the codec pack... heres a site that has it...
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm |
You could also try DC++. Just search for "DC plus plus"

is there a way to download a working copy of gift? i downloaded somehting from their website.... looks like just code files and i dont have the copiling software... if theres a setup.exe somewhere, can someone please tell me? I'm talking about a windows version.
|
blockmaan2000, I posted the link to DC++'s webpage up above. :D
|
Good riddence. Kazaa was slow as balls. Bit Torrent for life!

all they have hosted out of sourceforge right now is source-code, looks like it's set up for a linux install, too. so if y'all don't wanna buid it yourself, you should probably wait till they get far enough along to host up some binaries (installers and compiled executables).
|
The Windows gIFT client seems to beKCEasy.
|
Argh...my gf just *Paid* for the new Kazaa without consulting me. silly female....
|
All the most powerful downloading software isnt user friendly. The downfall of filesharing came with easy to use software packages starting with napster. mIRC is still the best

Still using Kazza Lite - I made sure that I kept a copy of the .exe so that if I ever needed to reinstall it I could without having to hunt. Its still pretty good, actually improved because all the stupid people renaming files and posting bad files have disapeared..
|
i haven't used kazaa for a while....
Edonkey is the bomb :D |
kazaa sucks at the moment, i don't know who's doing it (RIAA possibly) but most new tracks (obviously i own them already! :)) are fuked...either theres random noise added, or the song repeats itself over and over again. apparantly something to do with the hashing algorithms used in kazaa. oh well...move on to a new p2p
|
my kazaa lite still works fine, its just that i dont use it as much as i use bittorrent tho :)
|
kazaa still kicking. the only other thing i'm using right now is winmx but it blows really really blows.
thanks for the other file sharing program namews though the only one i heard of was bit torrent. |
I simply haven't downloaded in ages.... but my K-Lite copy still works fine. Didn't do a good search today, but I'm sure I'll get better... Last Time I used BT it went slow.. but hmm maybe with this large flux of people now it should run a bit smoother.... seeing that it requires people to be effective. I might have to try it out again.
|
Hehhehehe ther ip blocker still works...so at least they are updating that....i bet they will still make new copies and find a way to leak them outl.

I may be able to offer some insight into the "it works"/"it doesn't work" puzzle.
My guess is that if you had K-lite installed on your computer as of a certain date (sometime in late December?), it will continue to function - but it is no longer accepting new installlations (kinda like, "we're shutting down, but everybody who's signed up now is grandfathered in") I just bought a new computer, and used the same klite200b2e.exe file from my work computer to install it. Well, using it and 5 other .exe files that I've downloaded, I have yet to get it to connect - I get the opening screen, but "search" and "traffic" are grayed out. Also, I don't get the window pop up that always asks if I want to upgrade to v. 2.02 (which always happens on my computer at work - and as soon as I select "no", the search and traffic tabs become functional). Anyway, that's my theory. Your results may vary. So now I have a brand new fast computer with 115 gigs of unused space, and a cd/dvd burner, and no way to download music and video! |
yournamehere, i'll take that 115GB off your hands, i could really use it! i've filled up my HD thanks to bittorrent (BT). check it out:
