New computer

So, my computer decided that it wouldn't allow me to turn it on anymore. It would turn on but then turn off a second or two later. Sometimes after 20 or 30 tries it would turn on completely and work fine. I guess it's the PSU. But then I had an excuse for upgrading the beast! Yay. Here's my new setup:

Asus P4P800/Deluxe, i865PE, FSB800, 3200
Pentium4, 2600MHz Socket 478 FSB800
Corsair Value Kit DDR3200, 2x512 MB
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB, SATA150
Chieftec Midi Tower DX-01B-D-U Black

I'm getting it in a couple of days, mail order. Can't wait!
I'm using it for gaming, movies, 3D graphics, the works.

Good setup! That dual RAM will make your system run way faster. Remember to install the RAM in the dual-channel slots! The videocard is nice too (compared to NVIDIA and ATI's new low-end crap).

That is nice. the only question is why idd you get the Ti 4200 instead of the ti 4600 or 4800 instead?

Did you pick the HyperThreading Pentium 4? They're not a lot more but are tons tons faster. Also, I think the GeForce4 Ti4200 is the best sub $200 video card to come out in the last few years. Everything looks fantastic man. I don't know what you're coming from but you can't get a much better computer than that for the money. Have fun!

Nice setup. I have to upgrade my vid card soon, but the CPU is fine for now. I might go back to Intel next time. hmmm. Good luck with the new stuff!

His processor is 800 MHz FSB (Intel only makes HT 800 MHz FSB). Intel does make 533 and 800 MHz HT, but when it bumps to 800 they all have HT.

It totally sounds like your power supply was dying. Frankly it is one piece of equipment that people skimp too much on. While I may usually work on much bigger/nastier computers for industrial and embedded uses, a good power supply will extend the life of your system and will deal better with a crappy power feed from your local utility.

Also, you might even be able to find one that is quieter than your current one, unless of course you like the jet engine machine running underneath your desk.

It was expensive..... but quite a bit less than if you ordered the same machine prebuilt.

The Geforce 4 Ti 4200 was in my old computer, I bought it a couple of months ago for around $170.
This setup cost me $1000, including shipping.
I come from a Thunderbird 1,3 - A7v133-c - 512MB PC133 RAM - 80GB Maxtor.
So the new setup is twice as fast (reading in bare numbers) but really much more faster because of HT, dual DDR3200 ram and the 800MHz FSB. I really really can't wait to get it in my hands! :D
It should arrive tomorrow (where I won't be home because of concerts, sadly) or thursday. Plus, I'll be home alone all friggin weekend, playing and testing! Wheee....

Ashton 12-02-2003 05:48 AM

Well, I should add all the other stuff I got that the $2400 added up to........

XP Pro

4 X 80mm blue Antec led fans

Round cables

Black floppy drive

2 Blue Vantec cold cathode lights

And a bunch of software and stuff I may or may not need but is cool to have.
