Fat32->NTFS help
 

I tried to convert to NTFS using the "convert c: /fs:ntfs" command, but it didnt work.

After reboot, it started, but it said "not enough disk space"


BS!!

I am doing this on a 60GB drive, with only 25.2GB partitioned, and 17.9GB of that free.

Any sugestions?

A program called Partition Magic. Partitions drives, converts drives, works very good.

You might try BootIt NG as well. Shareware with no restrictions.

The conversion program does need free space. How much free space is in your current FAT32 volume?

is the partion you try to convert the partion you want to boot with ?

the partion you boot with has limit of 8gb in ntfs .. what OS are you using ?

If you're saying that the boot partition, in NTFS, can only be 8GB, you're flat out wrong. I've got servers at work with NTFS formatted boot partitions that are hundreds of gigs.

First, as said in my first post, I have 17.9GB free, on a total of 25GB partition. There is an additional 31GB non partitioned space on that drive.

Second, I am tring to convert my boot partition, that is why it requiered a reboot, and it said nothing about size limits. I am running XP pro.

Third, the dist is defraged.

Forth, I am a cheap bastard, so no partitioning software for me, I did try 2 different free ones, without any luck, and the ones I found on kazaa diddnt work.

Windows XP has a built in partitioning tool, but I don't believe it can change the current format of a partition, it can just allocate and format new partitions.

Control Panels -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management ->Disk Management

I also highly recommend partition magic, it's not too expensive for all of the power it has.

Disk managment only lets you create, not resize or convert. Tried there first :)

1 I dont have 2000, I have xp.

2 It is fully up to date.

Using BootIT, under the partition work menu there is the option to "slide" (it's off to the right) In the pop up menu that opens there is an option to "align for NTFS conversion."

I've never converted a boot partition (Well, the XP install....but I let it format the drive so, that doesn't count....), only extended partitions and seperate drives. I've encountered a few nagging errors, but after I've used BootIT to "align" they always go away.

I don't know how it works, it just does.

under nt4 it is the case :) .. not under the newer ones , sorry :)

Actually I think NT4 is limited to a 2GB boot partition, if memory serves me right - but I try not to think about NT4 these days. Bad flashbacks. :)

Here's a thought... Using BootIt, create a copy of your partition. Boot into XP. Then run CONVERT on the copied partition. Set the new partition as the active (boot) partition and reboot.
